All phones are supposed to be unlocked since December 2017. Although old stock provided to customers under contract thru about the summer of 2018 have a possibility of still being locked to the original provider. I have a flip phone still locked to telus that I just never bothered to get unlocked as its just a back up phone and I dont plan on ever leaving pm so it's not a worry for me.
All providers are bound by the WCC to provide the unlocking code upon request, free of charge and within a timely manner. This problem creeps up when phones are acquired on the used market and the current owner has never been a customer of the provider that the phone is locked to....then it can be a challenge to get it unlocked without the help of the original owner.
The exception to this is Rogers/fido who announced that after April 2020 they would not unlock their phones if you had not been not been a customer in the previous 12 months. They also regularily flat out refused to unlock even current customers in the hopes of increasing their retention numbers. Often suggesting to pay a third party in order to recieve an unlocking code.
This along with their policy is subject to punitive fines and industry reprimands but so few customers ever see a CCS complaint thru to the end or even demand satisfaction that Rogers/fido continues to flaunt the law at every opportunity.
Luckily pm recognizses you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar and happily will unlock phones that they can provide a code for basically from koodo or telus. Other provider will usually cough up a code quite quickly when they are reminded of their obligations and your willingness to communicate that you will see a CCTS complaint to the bitter end.

call the service provider to whom the phone is locked to and get it unlocked.
PM doesn't lock your device, atleast mine are not.

@t_p PM as well as Koodo are both part of Telus and that's why Telus locked phone will work here.
There is not supposed to be any locked phone sold by carrier any more due to CRTC rules. The Telus locked phones are Iikely sold couple years ago and the owner never bother to ask for tjr unlock code

CRTC put in a ruling about having to unlock phones free. Any carrier would do so with little to no hassle. I used to do it all the time!! But lately some have been bending the rules and putting in qualifications, making it harder to do, and sometimes the average person cannot meet those qualifications THUS the unlock does not happen. So if buying a second hand locked phone...no matter what....ask the seller to unlock it before hand and verify if it was done. If seller says locked or unlocked I always ask what carrier they used...then I would try my SIM to confirm (as long as carrier mentioned did not match). And as since PM is owned by Telus and as mentioned by @computergeek541 the logical thing to do would be ask PM to do if for you as no doubt you have been a customer for a few months. All the unlocking I did..when asked.....I would say I was travelling abroad and needed it unlocked. The last thing I would say....I am leaving and need it unlocked. Any phones sold after Dec 2017 must be unlocked. Any phones sold at the Apple Store ARE unlocked and always have been. And if you have an iPhone there are websites to confirm lock status.
Edit: And if you are at PM or elsewhere and plan to stay where you are and upgrade your existing phone with a new or second hand, it is very wise to sell your existing phone in the unlocked status as it is more saleable that way.

Get in touch with company your phone is locked with. Be it Rogers, Telus, Bell, etc.
They will unlock it if free for you. You would have to provide IMEI to them and they will provide unlock code and instructions how to enter it.
Some companies require proof you are/were their customers but I am not 100% sure of that.

While calling Telus would work, I wouldn't suggest this route unless you're a Telus Mobility customer. Carriers are sometines hesistent to unlock or provide an unlock code unless you're a customer.
Yes, a Public Mobile will assist with unlocking Telus/Koodo/Public locked devices .
Public Mobile doesn't network/carrier lock devices. In the case of the CPO phones, those are unlocked. There are some older devices that were sold by Public Mobile several years ago that are locked, but those were likely reallocated Telus and Koodo stock. As for some Samsung devices that lock to the carrier of the first SIM card, that's not actually Public Mobile doing that, but rather it's being done based on the software installed on the phone.

The phone could have been locked if on Telus or Koodo before. Locked phones on the Telus network will work with PM.

Public Mobile does not lock phone.
Your phone should be unlocked already. Try a SIM from another carrier in it will let you know right away.

I have heard that PM will unlock too.
Are you sure it is locked? Will a different SIM work in it (not Telus, Koodo or PM)?
