Data Usage

zaarrkon
Great Neighbour / Super Voisin

My plan renewed on March 21st with 1Gb of data.

I've been home sick all week using my home wifi.

On March 26th I got a text saying I've used 75% of my data.

Checked my account - 365Mb of 1Gb used.

What's up?

I agree, 75% of 1GB should be 768MB used, not 365MB.   The math does seem off.

What sometimes happens, is when folks have added or free data 'buckets' in addition to their plan data, the text warnings apply to only the buckets vs the plan data.

I'd recommend you ignore the text notifications and rely only on the "My Data & Add On's" section of your self-serve.

There are multiple possible reasons for your phone to use Cellular Data instead of Wifi and none of them have anything to do with Public Mobile (or any provider). Unless, you had your data fully OFF, your phone always had option to use Data when Wifi is lost.

You could lose connection to Wifi for multiple reasons:

- Power saving. In order to save power, phones sometimes drop connection to Wifi and if any activity in meantime happens, it could be using Cellular data

- Wifi disconnected. That also could be due to few reason, some interference, 'dead zone' in your place, etc

- Wifi gone. Routers are not 100% time up, there are time when they simple don't work, doing updates, get software glitch, etc.. I have to restart my home router once in a while to get it working. Sometimes, wifi work for some devices, but some not and again I have to restart.. Routers are combination of 'software and hardware' and many, many things can impact your connection.

- Something else.. It is hard to predict all possible reasons what have happen. Once I had a case when I was on video call, lost connection to Wifi (that I had no idea about) for a sec, Cellular Data took over (I did not disable Facetime to use Cellular Data), I've reconnected to Wifi in meantime but call continued through Cellular Data and I've used a lot (I was with Rogers at that time, but as I said, that is nothing to do with any providers, they just count)

So, I suggest you to minimize possible 'Cellular Data' usage on your phone settings (I don't know what phone you have), like ensure phone updates are only on wifi, apps that you really don't need to use data, disable access to it (if you can depending on phone),.

@zaarrkon It could be that you have Wifi Assist or Adaptive Wifi enabled and it has triggered without your knowledge (they will get triggered if there is a unstable Wifi connection)

Are you on Android?  If so, you can in fact easily trace back your usage if you go to your Mobile Data Usage setting, change your cycle start date to March 21 and then you will see how much data recorded on the device level and which app used the data:

@zaarrkon  Although you're on wifi you should go through your phone settings and adjust some things. There is a feature with different names depending on the phone model. May be called wifi + or Wi-Fi assist. Which automatically switches you back to mobile data if it noticed the Wi-Fi is having issues, running slow, etc. You should turn that feature off.

You may have another feature (found in developer options usually on an android) that is "Mobile data always on" That should be turned off as well.

Then you should go through each one of your apps one by one and adjust settings according like background data, if the app cause use data or WiFi only or both., Etc.

Do you accidentally keep DATA on?

You can check on on your account on which dates data has been used.

Please note, your Plan will use some data as a buffer but not that much!

Log in to your account and look at My Data and Add-ons. You'll see how much data is actually remaining.

The my account meter is the best bet when it comes to accuracy, so it may be glitch with the notification text. Although if you have been on WiFi it shouldnt even be 36% so the usual checklist would be make sure your internet hasn't been sporty or had any issues or you accidentally clicked WiFi off on your phone etc
