Whatsapp is commonly used in Mexico but having a voip app such as the suggested textnow or fongo is a good idea as well. Here are the options for your service when travelling internationally.
Most important mark on your calendar day 85 of your suspension and day 90. Do not forget when you must unsuspend your account via lost/stolen and/or pay and reactivate your service so you don't lose your phone number and account. Happy travels!
Here is some info on purchasing a local sim card in Mexico....

Hi @felix67 Whatsapp, Facebook Mesasge , Skype are all good ways to communicate but the same apps need to be installed on both ends, you and your friends
And easier way is to get a VoIP app , like TextNow as suggested, or Fongo. They both are good VoIP app. They will give you a new phone number. Your friends can call you just like any other number. Your app will ring whenever you have Wifi or Mobile Data.
Yes, you might want to get local Data SIM so you can get connected
Enjoy your trip

@dabr : You understand correctly with TextNow. The other end doesn't need to do anything differently.

@felix67 Yes you can use Whatsapp (over wifi/plan data) but that limits your messaging/calling to only those who also have Whatsapp installed on their phones, whereas Textnow provides free calling/texting and doesn't require that the other party also have Textnow. At least that is what I understand from some older postings, although I have no experience with Textnow and others can clarify if that's how it works or not.
Getting a local SIM/plan is probably the better idea as I believe they're very inexpensive in Mexico.

@felix67 : Use whatever you like that needs an internet connection via wifi or a local service provider. There are lots of voip services.

PM service works in Canada only. It will work in US with proper US add-on. No other countries are serviced by your PM plan.

Public Mobile has no service in Mexico. Either get a local provider service or use a voip app like TextNow that can do talk and text while on wifi.
