Hi,
I want to help my parents add-on a package while they travel home from the US. It looks like the most data I can add is 250 MB. I doubt that will be enough data for them to use their google maps all the way home from Florida to southern Ontario. Can They purchase more data than that? If so, how would I go about doing that for them?
Thanks.

@Mike0461 if you don't turn off mobile data on the phone, you must enable the "use Wi-Fi only" option within the settings of Google Maps, otherwise it will still use mobile data.

To limit data when using google map just download maps offline before your trip using any free Wifi access point. In this situation, 250MB should be enough considering that the map refresh with your actual location will consume 0 Byte of data.

Google Maps allows you to choose areas to download for offline use. If their phone has enough free storage space and they have Wi-Fi prior to departure, they can download all of the areas along their route and still have full turn-by-turn directions. Mobile data can then be turned off to conserve it for most of the drive. Some search results and traffic data will not be available while offline, but can be turned back on as needed.

@gblackma Thank you for your help. I've sent this message on to my mom. I don't yet know if it will work or not. I'll keep you posted when/if I find out tomorrow morning.

@Carolyn65 please ask your mother to manually select AT&T as her provider, put her phone in aeroplane mode for 5 minutes, take it off and restart. What's the make and model of your mother's phone? If it's an iPhone, she has to enable sms, mms and group messaging to send texts not using I message over WiFi.
That all I have.

We took the most recent advice and the texting is still not working. She can call, but not text. It's already been paid for so it should be working. I don't know what to do.

Thank you. I'll try that and let you know if it worked.

@Carolyn65 Is all texts or just mms texts? Tell your mom to enable data and roaming and restart her phone.

Hi Again,
Earlier today I bought an add-on package for my parents as they will be travelling from Florida to Ontario. I ended up doing this through a PM phone number. My mom is now able to call me from Florida, but her texting is not working. We did check to make sure that payment was made through her visa. What can we do to get the texting to work?
Thanks and thanks to everyone for all the help earlier today.

Try not to under-estimate older folks. They've been around the sun a few times. If they've figured out how to use mapping and directions then they're doing fine.
Remember too that these mapping services let one download data for offline use.
I'm also not sure they need to really rely on mapping as I'm assuming they've been there and back many times. I'm sure they know the way.

I am clear now how to add-on a US package with Data, but I can't find my mom's phone. Only my dad's is listed and they want it on her phone. They only have one email address and signed up for Public Mobile at the same time. I am working on this for them as it is too difficult for them as they are 80 years old.

Can I talk to someone? The robot is not very helpful.
Nobody to talk to directly. No call centre with Public mobile. Just send private message to moderator as described above.

PM changed the website a bit. Usually on the right lower corner of website. Might need to go to the general community website.
You could also directly message moderator:

@Carolyn65 You can submit a ticket. If you are having trouble with your services, the next step is to contact a moderator. Here is the link to create a ticket through SIMon: https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/bc/get-help ->Click on Chat with Simon on the line "ask me something" write "moderator" -> then click on "account specific question" -> afterward click on "no, I want a human" -> finally you will see an answer "submit a ticket Click me!"

@Carolyn65 Use this link to contact them directly https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/notes/composepage/note-to-user-id/22437
Keep an eye on the envelope top right of your screen. The mods answer will show up there.

I can't find the question mark to contact the moderator

@Carolyn65 The easiest way to tell whose account it is would be the name on the profile.

@Carolyn65 wrote:One more question. My parents have the same email address and I don't know if I'm looking at my dad's account only or if both of their phones are under the same account. Where do I see which phone the account I'm looking at is for?
Check under Plans and Add-on tab. It should show your plan details including phone number.
Need to have a separate email for each account. You may need to contact moderator to get access to 2nd account.
Click on the question mark on the right lower corner of website to start ticketing process to contact moderator. Type: Contact moderator. Follow the prompts to submit ticket.

After you log into the self serve account then click on the plans and add-on tab. The phone# is on the top left hand corner.

You should be able to add 1 GB data add on to the $20 talk/text/data add on to make it total of 1.25 GB data total. That should be enough. You could keep track and top up as needed.

Thank you. I guess I was already in the right place and the most data I can add is 500 MB. Do you have any idea if that is enough to use google maps from Florida too Ontario? And if I also buy the $20 Talk/Text/Data plan, that should actually give them 750 MB, correct?

There is a 1GB data only add-on. Purchasing add-ons are a two step process.

If they are there for an extended period then you may want to consider using mintmobility.com.
