I understand the public "3G" network is technically LTE throttled to 3G speeds.
Does anyone else notice the connection speed is highly variable?
Some days I can stream 1080p video , other days I can barely load a webpage.

@Meow Use WCDMA/GSM or WCDMA only 🙂

How do you change to 3G only? I do not see that option on my phone.
Only LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto), WCDMA/GSM (auto), WCDMA only and GSM only.

@Granit64 It could be just network issue. With LTE , the speed is 3Mpbs.
Did you try to change the Network speed to 3G Only? with 3G only, it could get up to 12Mbps, speed is higher but the drawback is higher latency as well.
Also, what kind of phone is yours? brand and models?

It could be you are losing connection with cell tower?
Ideally if you have a friend very close by with different provider you could determine if it is PM or cell towers issue.

Not on the 4G LTE network. I find it very consistently a tad under 3mbps when running a speed test. 3G network can be highly variable but the few times I have run a speed test on it it's between 9mbps and 13mbps. Just ran one on the 3G network=9.67mbps.

The LTE network is limited to 3Mbps. The HSPA+ network can also be used for data. Network performance is always going to be variable.
