Major Data Speed Throttling on PM vs Telus ?

Hey there

I've had a public mobile plan, 50gb of 5g data at "up to" 250mb/s, for just over a year now.. and I have to ask some of the experienced people here.. is the data we get severely throttled compared to Telus?

I had virtually the same plan at Telus with the "up to 250mb/s" speed, and speeds were drastically faster.

I can't find anything in writing anywhere that says it's throttled beyond that, or states that it is slower than Telus or Koodo data advertised at the same speed.

I used to get around 50 or so mb/s on Telus, and today (seems to be a bad internet time) I get about 5mb/s. On average it's around 12-15mb/s.  Which is still very slow compared to the advertised "up to" speed, and compared to my previous Telus plan.

If anyone has any information or tricks or tips I can do with my S23 Ultra to help this it would be seriously appreciated!

Thank you and happy holidays!

@DJPixcell   I get up to and even slightly over the advertised max speeds on a 5G plan some of the time, sometimes much less but not consistently low.  It depends where I am, probably time of day, whether indoors or out.  My phone is on 5G auto but indoors at home is always on LTE, presumably the 5G signal isn't strong enough here to penetrate the house walls.  Last speed test I did was indoors on LTE and it was 194 Mbps down and 26 Mbps up.  I try not to do too many speedtests as they use so much data.  If you're consistently getting very low speeds you could open a ticket with support, just submit it via the chat icon bottom right of this page.  I seem to recall one or two other people having this problem and support were able to help.  No guarantees though but it doesn't hurt for them to know what you are experiencing either way.

Just find it odd I never experienced it with Telus before.

And yes I'm very aware I won't reach cap speeds almost ever. My problem being I haven't seen speeds that Telus gave me since being with PM. And the 5mb/s I'm currently getting is absolutely atrocious.

But perhaps there is issues in my area as of late I'm unaware of.

Thanks for the comparisons folks!

hi @DJPixcell

other than Reset network settings, I can't think of what else to say

in terms of speed, I think it is reasonable for me.  I don't get 250Mbps all the time, but with the speed tests I did, they are mostly over 150Mpbs

and from what I see, with most people usage, anything over 50Mbps is decent on the phone (you won't notice the slowness).  Anything over 100Mbps is ok even when you hotspot to use it on a laptop.  Unless you are hotspot for 4+ devices, you really don't need 150+ Mbps

I have Telus and Public Mobile lines, and even though Telus has high max advertised speeds that I'll sometimes achieve, for the most part I'm well under the max with both carriers. If I'm in an area that gets me 10Mbps on Public Mobile, I'm getting that same speed on Telus.

@DJPixcell  5G with public mobile is up to 250mbps . That doesn’t mean you will always get those speeds and can vary quite bit location network congestion and environment . For example my phone drops to 3G in my basement or in my garage and I get slower speeds . I even have Telus line on 5G+ and that’s up to 2GBps best speed I’ve ever saw have been around 700mbps and I’ve done speed test that resulted in only 70mbps before so it’s always changing best to try in difrent areas on difrent networks like 4G/LTE and of course 5G

adding just checked my results again and even had it as low as 10mbps on Telus 5G+
