Someone stole my iPhone 12

Hi, I got a new phone so I was selling my iPhone 12 on FB marketplace. I reset the phone before sale like anyone would. I met the guy and he grabbed the phone from me, shoved me and took off with it. Because I reset it isn't in find my anymore so I can't report it. I have the IMEI number as it still shows in the settings of my new iPhone. Is there anyway to blacklist the device so the thief can't use it?

to make sure if the IMEI showing is the one from your new phone or from the one that has been stolen, check the IMEI after removing all SIM catds, you should then see only the IMEI from your current phone.

@mcdale83

You can blacklist your stolen phone with pm. It would be better if you have not already put your sim card in your new phone as this updates the IMEI that the sim card detects however pm should have a record of your stolen phone's IMEI. It takes up to 72 hours for the IMEI to be updated to the blacklist.

You will also need to file a police report. This can be done online. You can update the police report with any additional info such as original receipts and the description and contact info you have on the thief. File the report asap as you will need the file # to get the device blacklisted.

@HALIMACS

yes there are malicious people out there. it's very unlikely that some random person would know an IMEI number so yes that is the way to block a cellphone

@gpixel

Yes, that's how PROVIDERS blacklist devices.

But are you suggesting that anyone (just by knowing someone else's IMEI), can get their device blacklisted?

I highly doubt that would be easy.

Does anyone know if it is?

Sadly, @mcdale83 ,  you wouldn't be able to blacklist the device.

If one could do that with just having the IMEI#, can you imagine what some vengeful people would do?   Would be total chaos...

STILL, definitely follow advice to file police report, however given the circumstances this conniving thief may have gotten away with this.

@mcdale83 you properly need to report to the police first.   once you have the police report,  I think either PM support or Apple Support would be able to assist

@mcdale83 , dang that totally sucks! One of many reasons why I when I sell or buy things, I meet outside the police station or on the streets in front as there are cameras!

If you live in the lower mainland (Vancouver and surrounding areas), I be more than happy to give you a free SIM card.

report it as stolen nevertheless, and you might want to change your sim card ... but make sure the IMEI you report as stolen is the one from your old phone 😉

@mcdale83   Did you make a police report?  Also if you have an IPhone account, is there some place there that would allow you to register it as stolen.  Sorry, not really sure about the process involved in reporting it.
