Excuse my basic question.....Existing Rogers customer looking to switch to Public....While my phone is unlocked, my wife is still happy with he iPhone 7 we bought from Rogers, but now own, a few years ago.
Questions...
1) How do I get them to unlock her phone ....or do I have to?
2). Do we need to get a new sim? or is the present one (Rogers) suffice?

It is cutting it close because the iPhone 7 was released on September 7/2016 but CRTC forced carriers to unlock all phones on December 1/2017.
It depends when your wife got her iPhone 7. As @Phil_Adelphus noted, go to setting and check if there are No SIM Restriction.

@Rick727272 In the iPhone go to Settings - General - About - and scroll down to Carrier Lock. If it's not locked it will say "no SIM restrictions". Not sure if the path will be exactly the same on iPhone 7 as my iPhone 13 but it should be something similar. If it's locked oddly you would call the Billing Department at Rogers for the unlock code. At least that's what I had to do with mine.
One thing to bear in mind perhaps, especially if travelling to the USA, is that iPhone 7 is not VoLTE approved on Public Mobile.

another point to remember...if you plan on porting her old number to new Public Mobile account. DON"T cancel her account yourself as it needs to be an active account to port successfully. Once it is ported to PM, her old account is automatically deactivated.

@Rick727272 hi,
If a phone is locked to a particular provider, it only only be used at that provider. You have to ask Rogers to unlock it. It will not work here or anywhere else.
You also cannot use a Sim card from one provider, at another provider. SIM cards are only for the provider you are with. They can only be used once. If you cancel the account, that sim is null and void and you would have to purchase a new one regardless if you remain with that same provider.
You can purchase Public Mobile SIM cards, through the App at sign up, but it can take 3 weeks to receive. Or from Telus/Koodo/mobile Klink IF they sell them or purchase one from Amazon.

Questions...
1) How do I get them to unlock her phone ....or do I have to?...just call Rogers and ask to have it unlocked, should be free.
2). Do we need to get a new sim? or is the present one (Rogers) suffice?...You'll need a new sim (or esim) from Public Mobile. On that cellphone, download the PM app to start the activation process and buy a sim. Alternative is to buy a PM sim on Amazon or go to local Mobile Klink to purchase it.

1. if it is carrier llocked , you need to ask Rogers to unlock it if you got the phone from them. But borrow an active Telus or Bell sim card from friend and you can confirm id the phone is locked
2. You need a brand new PM sim to join PM. buy a PM sim from Telus or Koodo store or buy from Amazon.ca
