I want to convert to Public

Few questions: How do we switch to Public while maintaining our current numbers? Is there a brick and mortar store we can visit or is everything purchased on line?

Welcome to Public Mobile Community!

As of July 13th 2022 Public Mobile has returned to its roots of being an entirely online mobile service provider. They no longer offer in store retail activations. Unfortunately they also severely restricted the sale of sim cards to select koodo and telus's corporate stores or online from pm.

You may find a limited amount of pm sim cards on sale on Amazon.ca or eBay or resale sites such as Facebook marketplace or Craigslist. These are private sales and can be perfectly legitimate but as with all second hand sales....buyer beware....this can be applied to some sales people at legitimate retail locations as well.

The MSRP of a pm sim card is $10+tax. Public Mobile currently has them for sale at 50% off>>$5+tax. Shipping times are hit and miss>>3 days to 3 weeks. U would order 2/customer at half price....one for activation and a spare in case you ever need a sim card in an emergency (lost phone/sim card, damaged, a dud or a friend referral etc....) Now that sim cards are no longer readily available at a local retailer if at all to purchase and can take several weeks to be recieved having a spare sim card on hand can be a lifesaver!!

Once you have pm sim cards online activations are quite simple and the community can walk you thru it. If there is a promotion ensure you have met all of the terms and conditions before you start your activation. Learn all that you can from the community while you await the arrival of your sim cards.

Ask your family and friends to see if they are a pm customer so they can share their referral code with you. If no one is ( I had that problem!!) then make a new friend here and private message a community member ghat you like and ask for their friendship and to share their referral code with you...they will be unhappy to oblige. Unsolicited referral codes are against the rules....these people are not your friends and can and should be reported but that's up to you.

Once your first sim card is activated log into the self serve account and copy the referral code to use to refer your spouse for the second activation. Take screenshots of your activation info (email, password, acct. pin #, referral and promo codes if applicable) or write them down and put in a safe and secure place if ever needed for future reference.

While phone numbers can be ported in upon activation its best to take a temporary phone number and ensure everything gets set up properly and then port in thru the change number feature in your self serve account so that you have active service with either your old or new provider at all times until your activations and phone number ports are complete. (If you choose an Alberta phone # to begin you will only pay gst on your plan amount at activation.)

You will need the following info to port your phone numbers in to pm...

  1. Full name on the old account.
  2. The phone #
  3. The old provider business name.
  4. The old account # (preferable) or your phone's IMEI # or account pin # (not preferable).
  5. Alternate phone # (home, work, friend, family member etc...) optional but handy if needed.

Make sure your phone is unlocked if you purchased it through your old provider and its an older model phone (2018 or older to be safe) as it can easier to get unlocked from your provider while you are still a customer.

Your account needs to be active to port out from and will automatically close and cancel once your port completes. Keep your old sim card in your phone to reply YES to the PAT (porting authorization text) within 90 minutes of recieving it.

Your port should complete within a few minutes to a half hour to an absolute max of 2 hours (unless its not a mobile # as landlines, voip # or from another type of service then it can take 2+ days, 7+ days or more....)

The port is complete when the old sim card stops working, the old account is closed/cancelled and all services are working again on the pm sim card with your ported phone #. Reboot your phone if necessary. Welcome to Public Mobile!!

NO brick and mortar for PM.

https://publicmobile.ca/en/on/portal/activation

- Purchase a new Public Mobile SIM card. You can order it from PM or any other retail outlet. Currently CCS (https://canadiancellsupplies.com/) has great offer for Public Mobile (free SIM, 20% first month). Walmart offers free SIM with activation in store.

- If you want to activate service by yourself then get just SIM.

- Have a payment card ready, either a Canadian credit card or Visa debit

- Decide what email address you wish to use on the Activation Portal – each account has to have unique email

- Seek a referral code from a friend or relative who may have active PM service - this will save each of you money. You can ask for referral code here if you care to receive $10 sign up bonus. Person providing referral code will receive 1 point as long as you are PM’s customer.

- Start process of creating PM self-serving account and enter all relevant and required information

Once you have the SIM you also have the easy option of activating via live chat:

@WayneFroese Hi you can pick up a SIM card at your local Koodo store but they no longer activate it you must do that at home purchasing a sim online may take up to three weeks as for keeping your old numbers that can be ported during activation, your old accounts must be active in order to transfer your numbers

The only thing you can do in store is to buy the sim card, from Telus or Kood,  the rest of it is fully online

To switch to PM and maintain your number, you just need to choose to transfer your number during activation.  Most numbers can be transferred , but you can double check the eligibility here:

https://secure.koodomobile.com/checktransfereligibilityparrot/default.do?lang=en&appname=otherportal

(it's a Koodo site , but both Koodo and PM are owned by Telus)

If you only want to try out the service first, you can pick a number first, then choose to transfer number after.  You can initiate that transfer at Self-Serve My Account stie after you activated
