I just joined Public mobile and i want to keep my number so when I tried transferring my number, it said it could take 5 hours but i ended up getting a different number and when i try entering my old number, it says it will send a verification code which i cant receive

What provider are you transferring the number from? You need to keep your old line active until the port is complete. And you need to keep your old sim in your phone until you receive the port confirmation text to your old number. You need to respond "yes" to that text when you receive it.
