Green Text Messages Not Sending But Being Received - IPhone XR

PippinRainbow

Hi everyone,

As the subject title says, I have been unable to send green text messages but I am able to receive them. I can call, use my 5G data, and send blue texts, but no luck sending green texts. Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this issue?

Thanks 🙂

@PippinRainbow

if you put your Bell SIM card back in your device, do you still have any services, whatsoever, on it?

 IF SO , the port didn’t complete.

I switched from Bell on August 28, 2023. Yes, I believe I ported the number from bell to public mobile. But it was done automatically I believe, I just had to confirm that I wanted to leave bell and switch to this different phone plan/company.

@PippinRainbow  how long ago did you switch from Bell?  Did you port your number from Bell to PM?

For the contacts who I text with the blue message box, I do have the option to send it as the green SMS but again, it never delivers.

@PippinRainbow

when you type the message and it tries to send in blue caption, what happens when you immediately press and hold down the blue message box?

Does it give the option to send as SMS? (green SMS)

I have an e-SIM so unfortunately I cannot try that. Good suggestion.

@PippinRainbow

can you try something for us, please.

If you are using a physical Sim card [not an eSIM] try it in another device altogether and see if you can send SMS messages using that other device.

Preferably try it in another iPhone, if available to test.

Seems to me like if you just completely turn off iMessage it’ll all default back to SMS [which is the green text you’re wanting]

Adding:  when you type the message and it tries to send in blue caption, what happens when you hold down the message? Does it give the option to send as SMS?

Any recipient I try to send a green text message to. I know I’m not being blocked as I receive texts from my close family members. I simply cannot reply. Thanks though!

@PippinRainbow

how many recipients are you talking about ? Is it possible that they've blocked messages from your number. 😕

I did both options and it still is not being delivered. Thanks for trying though 🙂

HI @PippinRainbow

try this with the contact

If you are on a text message and want to change the default SIM card you need to:

  1. Open Messages and the conversation with the contact
  2. Tap on the Contact (at the top) and click on info
  3. Click on info again
  4. Under the contact name, you should see "last used: Primary >". Click on this option and then choose the Primary or Secondary SIM

You can also change the Default Voice Line altogether from Settings > Mobile Data > Default Voice Line.

How would I go about doing these changes? I can’t interact with either the primary or personal information in my settings.

I checked as you directed but didn’t see any carrier profile update. But I did notice that there were two categories: Primary and Personal. Under Primary it says there is no newtwork available and it lists the name of my previous carrier (Bell) who I no longer have a phone plan with. Under Personal it says the network is public mobile. Perhaps this is what’s causing the issue?

HI @PippinRainbow

yes, change the Bell's one to another tag to free up Primary and set the PM's to primary

Thank you for trying to help me fix this issue!

Since you replied to me, I'll defer to Apple folks to help you on that.

HI @PippinRainbow

yes, update to OS 16.6 first

also, for those that can't be sent, you can click on the text and ask it to send as Text to re-try

I would do the OS update. Do it on wifi. Then we're looking for a carrier profile update.

Adding - that was settings, general, about.

Thanks for the idea! I tried this as well but it still didn’t deliver

It only is when texting certain contacts (that only use the green text messages) or I try to send an instant blue message as a green text message. I saw in general settings that there was a software update iOS 16.6. So I’m hoping maybe after updating my phone it will work?

Try turning off wifi and data to force it to send through sms and see what happens. Sometimes it just want to send as an Imessage over wifi/data instead of SMS.

So is this trying to text all contacts? Or not all? Is it possible that the ones that don't go through used to have an iphone and changed over to Android?
Did you check the about setting?

Yes I do!

Thank you for replying. I have both SMS and MMS turned on in my iMessage settings but still no luck.

Green texts are real sms texts. Blue "texts" are old timey instant messages that Apple decided to use. Not real sms texts. Turn on send as sms and send as mms in imessage options.
Also go to settings, general, about and see if any updates happen.

@PippinRainbow  Do you have sms enabled in your iPhone settings
