First time setup - Don't Make the same mistakes which I did

Hello everyone,

I recently switched to Public Mobile. Initially, I was with Virgin Plus, and I switched to Fido, but I didn't like the service from Fido and finally decided to make the switch from Fido after 2 days of service. The actual problem started with porting the number. Everything was smooth until it wasn't. I have set up my account in like 15 minutes, and I made a call to my friend just to check if it is active or not. It worked, so I was happy.

On the second day, I found that I could only make calls, and my internet is working. I am not able to receive calls or SMS, or I can't even send SMS. My RCS was also not working because porting didn't go through from the Fido side because I have switched providers twice in 1 week. Also, I have thrown my SIM card in the trash after breaking it, so I can't use my old SIM to receive the authentication message again. I have to be on the phone with the transfer team for like 2-3 hours.

Mistakes:

1. Always make sure to check if you can make/receive calls and send/receive SMS. Everyone is using the internet on a regular basis, so it's obvious to check for internet.

2. Don't throw away your old SIM card; at least have it for a week after you switch and make sure everything is working fine.

You will definitely find help you seek but if you learn from my mistakes, it will be less trouble, and your issue will be solved in few minutes instead of few hours.

Thank you for reading the post, if you have any related questions let me know

Lots of people get tripped up during porting. They should make it really obvious that you need to keep your old service active during sign up, big bold letters.

@kmpatel100  That’s interesting for sure as both Telus and bell have their own towers but have agreements to share each others towers . So typically anywheres that’s good with bell should be good with Telus and vice versa . Rogers  seems to be the lone wolf that can have better  coverage for some in certain areas

hi @kmpatel100

it could be due to APN settings.  But if PM has a better experience, then that's a good place to stay 🙂

I am not so sure; I believe TELUS has different cell towers, but I might be wrong because previously with Virgin plus and bell we had lot of problems when it comes to internet. calling was OK but internet was bad. the problem started in last year before that everything was smooth. I was using Virgin for last 5 years.

@kmpatel100  .i can see it being better then  Fido ? But virgin should be pretty much the same as it’s under bell and Telus/PM share Telus / bell towers

I love it, it's better than Virgin or Fido in my area at least and it's like half the price for better plan.

Good info @kmpatel100

Welcome to Public Mobile.  I hope you like it and don't need to deal with porting again 🙂

thanks for sharing.

yes, with porting, it is important to keep the old service active and the reply to the test is an important step
