I have a UMIDIGI G9 5G and cannot connect to cellular data. WIFI and calling all work. I have tried resetting APN info, but the "enable/disable APN" option is greyed out. I have just upgraded to the $29 5G 200g option, but still no success. I might have to return the phone if I can't fix it.

Thursday
Here's the update. After several weeks of frustration, I finally did get my UMIDIGI to download data and voice in Canada. Then I went on a short vacation to the US and found that I could get 5G data, but no voice. So, when I got home I returned the device to the seller. Sadly, since it seems like a very nice phone. I have since bought a Motorola MOTO 5G 2024. Amazing! I installed the sim card and presto! Both data and voice connection, as well as WIFI immediately started up. No hassle. Thanks to everyone who did so much to help me.

Wednesday
I got My UMIDIGI G9 5G to work on Public Mobile.
I entered the correct APN values
I found some IMS settings wit a web search
I Set up IMS
I entered "Engineering Mode" on the phone to toggle on the Volte and the Volte Whitelist registration radio buttons
I rebooted and now the staus bar reads HD LTE which allows for voice and data at the same time and stops the voice call rom dropping to 3G
Still no 5g signal on the phone though. Still working on Umidigi for that ut am not optimistic. They did send me an update which gave me 5G for a while but it seems to have deactivated after reboot

Maybe, but after all the hassle in getting the APN correct (I was able to do so with help) and then having it not work in the US, I decided that enough was enough. Sorry, I can't recommend it. It might even be that having VOLTE compatibility will be the standard in the near future.

hi @Xiaohuabird
your Udigimi G9 5G issue might be a problem with that particular one. G9 has the proper 4G and 5G band and it should work

I had a Umidigi Bison and it worked well with the cellular data. Not expecting G9 5G to not work at all☹️ In total, I like the G9 5G one except this data issue. I am in a pickcle to return the G9 5G or not🤔
Anyway, thanks a lot for your help!

hi @Xiaohuabird
the APN will only help with data
if your phone is not VoLTE whitelisted by PM, there is nothing you can do.
please use VoIP app workaround as said above

hi @JoeK
unfortunately, only selected phones are VoLTE compatible with PM network and yours is not one of them
all your can do is either get a VoLTE phone that is on PM's whitelist or you use VoIP app like TextNow or Fongo to make calls on the app

Yes I did and was able to access cellular data. However, when I went to the US on a vacation, I could get data, but due to lack of VOLTE compatibility, no voice. So, when I got home I returned the UMIDIGI and purchased a Moto g phone. No problem at all when I put in the PM sim card. This one has VOLTE capability. So, don't buy a UMIDIGI if you plan to go to the US. Plus, there might be problems in the future, since VOLTE is apparently far superior. Thanks to everyone who reached out to help me.

Have you find a way to fix the data issue with UMIDIG G9 5G? I had the same issue as yours right now and looking forward to your reply. Thanks ahead!

No. You can even borrow a friend's sim card if they are with Freedom. Most sim cards are non-returnable so I would only consider a purchase if reasonable. You can always ask to borrow one to "check compatibility" or see if the mobile department has recently switched a Freedom customer and has a canceled Freedom sim card in the bin.

Thanks, RR. Does that mean switching to Freedom Mobile? I would to that, but their roaming charges are $14/day vs. PM at $15 for 15 days.

See my notes above on the possibility that cell companies have a deal with a few manufacturers and then only allow those to function fully on their networks. Just a guess, but it does seem to work that way. And since Telus has taken over PM, they control those customers as well.

Huge thanks to all the community members for your helpful responses. As near as I can figure out, it seems to me that the big cell companies (Bell, Telus and Rogers) have a deal with certain manufacturers to jack up the price of phones for anyone not wanting to pay monthly charges for 2,3 or more years. I was in a Koodo shop yesterday and a customer was buying a new phone for $1700. which was almost exactly 10 times what I paid for a UMIGI G9 5G. Now I'm not suggesting they are equally good phones, but TEN TIMES?? Any guesses how much the phones that are selling for well over $1000 are actually costing the companies? Something our Competition Branch might be interested in looking into. I will try the London Drugs suggestion. All the others have been tried and did not work, but thanks for taking the time anyways. Happy New Year!

Maybe the old trick of using a Freedom mobile Sim card to access your APN edit option will work? Used to work with active or previously active Freedom Sim cards or the (now defunct) Roam Sim cards.*
Alternatively you may be able to get a configuration file texted to your phone from customer support but will likely need to get it from one of the more senior agents that have worked for Public Mobile for a few years.
*If you live out west there are the odd London Drugs that still have Roam Sim cards for sale ($0.15 ea.). If your lucky enough to run into one it's worth a go at seeing if it will help you access your APN?

@JoeK can you create a new apn? Data should work on all phones, there's no whitelist or special hardware requirement.

@JoeK , have you tried performing a network reset. Also is there an option for you to add a new APN? If that is available, try creating a new APN using the information in the link below.

It has nothing to do with the plan or SIM card. It has to do with Public Mobile and their lack of cooperation of updating their whitelist to the entire phone market or at least well reputable brands. By forcing customers to use the big brand names only like Samsung, Apple and Motorola is, in my opinion, a violation of the competition act in Canada. By not allowing other phone companies to be used on their network is a violation under the act and I'm dumbfounded how nobody has challenged this yet.
Side note, I have a Cat flip phone from 2021 and it was from their "sister company" T-Mobile. They refused to place the phone on their whitelist. There is NOTHING wrong with using the phone with Public Mobile but when you go to the US, you're SOL. Makes zero sense.

Is there a list available of phones that are "supported whitelist"?

@JoeK Can ask support if there’s anything they can do to help or just return that phone if you can and get another phone . Best to stick to the main brands Samsung / Apple for best possible experience with public mobile in my opinion
you can use the orange chat bubble bottom right of screen or send a private message To CS_Agent

Hello @JoeK
Sadly the UMIDIG G9 will not work on the Public Mobile network in 5G as it's not a supported whitelist phone.
