VOLTE?

How can I confirm that VOLTE is enabled on my phone with Public Mobile?

10 REPLIES 10

@Yummy   You can also check if VoLTE is enabled on an Android phone by looking for the IMS registration, try something like Settings > About Phone > Status > SIM Status and look for VoLTE/IMS registration.

Your phone can be LTE capable without being VoLTE capable/enabled.  I have one such myself, it is supposedly capable but was not enabled on my previous (Tier 1) carrier.  It would show LTE in the status at the top but the LTE would change to 3G on voice calls.  VoLTE is voice over LTE, it does not necessarily follow that a phone capable of LTE is also enabled/capable of VoLTE.

Your test suggests to me that the phones are not VoLTE enabled (as well as being used synonymously with LTE in many cases, 4G can refer to a kind of 3G I believe, depending on carrier, but someone more technical than me would need to comment on that aspect).

SMS should still work after the Canadian 3G shutdown I would assume, the carriers have ways to send them without 3G.  Think about the USA which shut down 3G in 2022.  People there are still able to use SMS.

If you don't have any of these phone models and above, your current phone isn't compatible for VoLTE at the moment.

That list cannot be relied upon as it isn't complete.   Also, a phone model being on the above list doesn't ensure that VoLTE will work either.  If the phone has a version of software installed from a different a carrier, VoLTE might not work.

If the phone stays on LTE it is VoLTE enabled, if it drops to 3G it is not.

Is that a Reliable test?

As I turn data on I immediately see LTE even though I do not have VoLTE option in phone settings.

BUT as you pointed out ONLY after placing a call you can see actual status. So I see H+ (on S7) and G4 (on S10). What that means? And the most important question is: will SMS work after eventual 3G shut down in Canada?

@Maribel19 So what does that mean for the S8 phone. They can't call someone

It will still work in Canada until the 3G network is shut down which may be years away.  It will have problems if travelling in the USA which has already shut down 3G and the 2G that people have been able to fall back on is scheduled to shut down in the USA on April 2nd.  You can test if the phone is VoLTE enabled by turning off wifi, turning on cellular data and making a phone call.  If the phone stays on LTE it is VoLTE enabled, if it drops to 3G it is not.

HI @Maribel19

S8 is for sure not VoLTE whitelisted with PM but 7a should be

@Maribel19 - Your Pixel 7a is ready for VoLTE but your Galaxy S8 isn't compatible yet.

HI @Maribel19

All accounts are now enabled with VoLTE, however, not all phones are whitelisted with VoLTE on PM

Any phone on here are whitelisted, and I believe the newer phone on the same line of the models are whitelisted as well (so, S24 would be whitelisted as S23 is)
