I just purchased a US update. When I call the states my phone tells me I have used all of my available minutes and the call does not go thru. I have not made one call yet.

It sounds like you are calling from Canada to the US.
Did you purchase US Long Distance calling?

to call most any US number while you're in Canada, you need the 1000 minutes of US calling add-on for $15.
To call most any US number while you're in US, you need the 15 Day US Talk / Text bundle for $15 or the talk/text and 3GB data for $30.

@smgraf Try rebooting the phone . Also did you mistakenly buy a US roaming add on and not US long distance add on by any chance ? Check what add on you got like this .
Try again incognito/private mode
And or lap top /computer
OR
simply try refreshing the page to check data plan / mins / add ons
