Speed tests and connections

<span;>Why is full access to the Telus network not available. This is confirmed by a Telus agent. Ookla Speedtest shows connections via Telus, Rogers, Bell and others. I have the 20GB Canda, USA, Mexico plan. Speedtest normally shows download speeds of 1 to 3 MBPS. Sometimes Speedtest fails due to no signal at all. Occasionally speeds go up to 5 to 7 MBPS. The best speeds occur when connected to Rogers. All results are from my rural home. The coverage map indicates 5g is fully available. I have a Samsung S24 FE.</span;>

@Johnd2   In addition, your screenshot shows that the battery saver is on, so another thing you might want to try is turning the battery saver off to see if that makes a difference, if you haven't tried that already.  If neither that nor reset network settings helps then best to contact customer service and see if there's something they can do.

@Johnd2   Thank you for the screenshot, that clarifies the question since originally we were thinking you were saying you were able to use Rogers network whereas that's not what you meant.  Now we know your phone is on the Public Mobile/Telus network, as it should be, and you mean that you get different speed results depending which company's server Ookla selects as the most appropriate.   You can read how that works here

https://help.speedtest.net/hc/en-us/articles/360038679834-How-does-Speedtest-select-a-server

The servers aren't even always the "big three".  Although if you have an account (I don't) you can select a server yourself, is that what you do?  As you can see from my screenshot, the speed even on LTE can be pretty good.

Have you tried resetting network settings (not factory reset, that wipes everything) as described by Samsung here?

@Johnd2  Here's a screenshot I just took, it shows that my carrier is Telus and that my test server is Bell.  Is this not something like you are seeing?   You're not seeing Rogers where it says Telus in this screenshot but you're seeing it underneath?

Ookla only shows Telus if it gets connected to Telus. It shows only the connection it establishes, such as Telus or Bell, or Rogers, etc.

OH good catch @Phil_Adelphus!

Speed test doesn't necessarily mean that's your cellular connection, that could just be who is hosting the speed test server or where it's routing through. Your phone will tell you which provider you're connected to.

This makes way more sense because there's no way you should be able to use your phone when connected to Rogers or Bell (save for those couple exceptions noted).

@Johnd2  Ookla Speedtest shows connections via Telus, Rogers, Bell and others

Just to understand this better, do you mean that your Ookla speed test shows Telus under the GO button, and the other carrier names underneath that (indicating those are the servers being used for the test)?

Regardless if your speed is consistently that slow you might want to contact Public Mobile customer service as suggested initially.  I notice in my Ookla results that the speeds seem to diminish as the days go on, often being lower in the evenings.

The sim card says Public Mobile on it, and sim manager also says Public Mobile.

@Johnd2  Just to confirm, this sim card is a specific Public Mobile sim card?

Johnd2

Only one physical sim card, no esim. The best service is when connected to Rogers. Less service when connected to Bell, Telus or others. I live in Normandale ON.

@DennyCrane

another known area for Telus to roam free on  Rogers-EXT is around Highway 95 between Golden and Sparwood

hi @Johnd2

are you in BC?  from what I know, only a particular small area, mainly in BC, that Telus and PM customers and roam onto Rogers network.

@Johnd2 Those issues seem unrelated, and TBH a bit perplexing 🤔 I didn't think we as Telus/Public Mobile customers had access to Rogers, except in exception places where they are the only provider and there is an agreement in place to allow extended coverage (and that definitely wouldn't apply in native Telus coverage areas).

You're saying you have a Public Mobile sim that is connecting to Rogers? Does service work when you're connected to Rogers? Are you sure you don't have another sim or esim in your device? E.g. an esim profile from when that phone may have been with Rogers in the past? Check your sim card settings to see if you have 2.

Also what city are you located in?

I have my phone set to 5g auto. If I had access to full Telus network as I should, why would I get connected through Rogers network?

Access to the "full Telus network" is most certainly available. Speed fluctuates based on many factors. I have a Telus and a Public Mobile line, and if they're side-by-side they effectively get the same speed; and sometimes that's fast and sometimes it's slow as you experienced.

I personally prefer to just leave my phone on 4G vs 5G, because I find i get a more consistent connection that way. I only like 5G if I'm right by the tower.

@Johnd2  Public Mobile advertises speeds up to 250Mbps on 5G plans, and to 100Mbps on 4G plans, so not expected to get higher than that.  I'm able to get those speeds depending on place, time of day etc. and even in a relatively rural area the last speed test I did on LTE was 194Mbps down and 26Mbps up.  It's not always that high though but I've also got slightly higher than the 250Mbps cap when out and about in more populated areas.  What is your phone set at?  Mine is an iPhone set to 5G Auto but it only gets LTE in the house because 5G doesn't penetrate buildings as well.  If those are the speeds you're getting wherever you are you might want to contact customer service by opening a ticket at the chat icon bottom right of this page.  If that doesn't work for you then send support a private message using this link

Be careful doing many speedtests on Ookla or you'll soon  have no data left!  It really gobbles it up.
