Ported out, use data until end of month?

Hi there, I signed up for the $35 plan after Christmas and pre-paid for January with my credit card. Last night I was offered a win back deal with previous provider so I ported back. As I have prepaid for this month can I use the PM data by placing my SIM in another phone? I did that and it says no service. My PM account has been disabled. If I cannot use the data in another phone could I apply the funds to my other PM account which I have set up for my husband, would that be an option?

If I have prepaid I should not have had my account deactivated within hours as that is record that I have paid for a service that in theory I should still be able to access until the end of the month.

Thank you!

@darlicious I mean, including the two bonus add-ons in your calculation is a bit iffy. I think a lot of customers (including the two PM customers in my family) keep accumulating those every December and never/rarely ever dip into them.  They are potentially valuable, but also cost the customer nothing out of pocket to acquire.

That leave the other ~$55, of which it sounds like they used a week +/- a few days of their service, so discount that part a little too.  Let's call that a quarter of their $35 plan cost, leaving about $26 worth of unused plan plus the SIM card and taxes.  Honestly, that's not much.

I have no idea who the old-now-new carrier is or what the winback offer was, but monthly savings can add up quickly over the lifespan of the term. We don't really have contract terms any more but let's assume you also pick up a new device in the process and sell your soul for 24 months to pay it back*.  If you're even saving $5/month on the plan, that's $120 over the two years (plus tax), so it doesn't take long to be on the right side of the break-even point and gaining going forward.

* of course, you can terminate a tab and pay off the remaining balance any time without penalty but I think many just stick around for at least the two years.

@srlawren

Yes that is likely but the new/old provider should have accommodated the OP for the fact that they had just activated a new account so they left on the table a fair amount of value by porting out their number. PM sim card (msrp)$10+$35(plan cost)=$45+$10(bonus referral credit)=$55+$55 (holiday gifts 2gb data add on $30+$25 intl min add on)=$110 of pm product and services basically unused. An agent's commission took precedence over giving good customer service to their client.

Hmmm....I wonder if it was koodo?🤔Lol!

@darlicious it's possible the offer was contingent upon porting (e.g. tied to the number that was ported out previously)

@jlmacdougall22

Maybe the new/old provider will give you credit for the lost services at pm for convincing you to take their win back offer without telling you the consequences of porting out your phone number.

HI @jlmacdougall22   , sorry, if you have completed porting the number back, your account would have been closed.  However, If you have not replied yes to PM asking for your permission to port, then don't answer it and request the porting again later.

But from what you said, I think you already ported away.  If that is the case, account closed and no, there is no more service with PM.   PM is prepaid service and no partial refund as well

@jlmacdougall22

Sorry but porting out automatically closes your account. You should have taken a temporary number with your new/old provider and ported your number in a couple of days before you would have renewed. This is across the board at every provider. Porting automatically closes your account.

@jlmacdougall22 porting out cancels the account.  That's how things work with other carrier brands as well.  Also you forfeit the remainder of the 30 day cycle.  Sorry for the bad news.
