New user OnePlus phone, no 5g or VoLTE

Hi Everyone!!!!

New member here. I currently have the OnePlus Nord N200 5g. I'm on the 50gb, Can/US calling, 5G plan. I'm new to PM and the transition and porting of my number was easy. Mobile app setup was a piece of cake but now I'm running into issues. My phone no longer shows 5G as an option in preferred networks and I can only connect to 4G on PM. My VoLTE is enabled but I still drop to 3G when on a call which isn't a problem here but will be when I travel to the US which I do frequently.

I have been searching the community for days and all I can come up with is that there is a whitelist of phones (which is small) that is compatible with all of PM features including 5G and VoLTE. I have a hard time with this and contacted support through email and I'm getting tired of going back and forth all day for them to keep telling to me reset my network settings just to have to input all my wifi, Bluetooth and APN settings again. I'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to configuration and I've got everything setup as it should be and still getting nowhere.

Has there been any development regarding this issue? Is it PM's issue of whitelisting certain phones or is OnePlus playing shenanigans? Am I looking at having to get a new phone or another service? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I have an Asus Zenfone 10 that's also VoLTE compatible, but it's not whitelisted by PM. I talked to their customer service, and got escalated to their IT, who finally told me my only option is to get a phone in Canada that's on the whitelist. I was not happy with this answer and complained to the CCST who did accept my case, despite PM's argument that it is the customer's responsibility to ensure phone works on their network. I argued that limiting the phone options would defeat the purpose of a bring your own phone service, given PM doesn't even offer phones for people to purchase! In any case, I did get a call from PM who basically told me they are working on expanding that whitelist, but she couldn't tell me when it will actually happen. This all went down in November, it is January now and my phone still only works on 3G when I try to make calls. It previously worked on LTE, and suddenly it doesn't?

I had exchanged my rewards for basically 2 free months of service, and if it still does not happen by then, I will be leaving PM/Telus. They have also started to send me Koodo deals, which is just adding insult to injury. I had told them my phone is just 2 years old and I am not ready to throw down another grand just because. 5 years ago, I was so happy when I found PM, because Fido was treating me (20+ year subscriber) like garbage, but PM is just the same.

Check on the Telus website if your phone is compatible. https://www.telus.com/en/support/article/how-to-use-volte

If not, you'll not see it most likely. On BBK phones (OnePlus, oppo, real me etc) you're not going to see 4G/5G in settings. Might be true for other manufacturers too due to settings set by PM. You can only check in developer settings if 5G is turned on from your site. But it could still fail if it's not white listed. Then you need a third party app to force 5G (had the same problem with Rogers).

My phone works out of the box and is compatible according to the Telus check. Check it out for your phone.

OnePlus fell out of favor because of their software.  I suspect that in this particular case, it is software that is hindering VoLTE and 5G.  In recent times, Public Mobile seems to have quietly expanded the VoLTE whitelist.  I would imagine anything not making the cut by now will never had access.

Thanks everyone for all your support. I find it heartbreaking that less than a handful of providers will go to such lengths to extort more money out of us. I shouldn't have to take out a 2nd mortgage for a cell phone and plan. From what I can see the block isn't just on the back end but on the sim as well since I don't even see the option for 5g in the preferred networks. Although there is workarounds to force 5g, I shouldn't have to use third party apps to achieve this.

Thanks again everyone, I have some thinking to do and decisions to make.

@DaveVS18  Am I looking at having to get a new phone or another service?

If you're thinking of changing service you would need to check in advance if the carrier supports that phone.  For example there are no OnePlus phones listed as VoLTE compatible on Fizz's list, which is similar to PM's, and Rogers/Fido/Chatr are shutting down 3G altogether in March 2025.  They have a VoLTE compatibility tool here, you can try entering your IMEI but I didn't get a result for OnePlus using the "select phone" option.

for the US issue, you might want to manually try connecting to T-Mobile or AT&T, try both and see which one works better.  And use 4G instead of 5G.  And of course, turn on Mobile Data Roaming on the phone

Many confirmed that you need to delete the current APN profile first.  Then Add new profile and add according to this, please note case-sensitive and do not add extra spaces.

I don't see any mention of data not working, but only that VoLTE isn't working and there is no 5g network connection.  Changing APN settings can't enable another network type.

@DaveVS18

PM has chosen to whitelist a small number of volte enabled cell...use this link to find if yours is included.

It may still work in US...some users report theirs work on volte even though they're not on whitelist.
