I've been using a Nokia 7.2 on PM's network for the past 5 years, no issues. What I've always liked about PM is that by not having to worry about phone contracts I can have whatever international phone I want as long as it's network compatible.
Suddenly I'm finding when at home, I have full signal strength but no calls are going through. Data works fine.
I dug into it a bit and found that Telus and all Canadian carriers are shutting down 3G, and that my phone since it doesnt have 5G has been dropping to 3G to make calls, presumably for years and I never noticed.
And something about a VOLTE whitelist for 4G calling compatibility.
Is this what i'm seeing here? Telus/PM has arbitarily decided in dropping 3G they don't want my little import phone to be allowed to make calls anymore?
This is aggressively anti-consumerist if this is the case. Please tell me there's a way around this? Are they going to tell me any other phone I might import isn't allowed either? Apples and Samsungs only?
I don't know what to make of this.

Carriers in Canada are actively refarming the 850MHz band 5 spectrum for use on the 3G network which includes testing to see the effect on the network and customers who are using 850MHz band 5 on LTE and 1900MHz band 2 on 3G/HSPA. Over time, 850MHz band 5 for 3G wil be eliminated entirely, and eventually, 1900MHz band 2 on 3G as well (this is further out into the future). This is being done to provide the best service to most customers. In the end, your only really choice will be to get a new phone.

hi @Julia_1 not anti consumer, just technical
what phone you have again? if you have a phone that is designed for Asia and it lacks 3G-1900, then you are impacted

Hey @Julia_1
As a customer like you, I wholeheartedly agree with a lot your saying. In the United States the removed the 3G network which seems like Canada is doing the same within the next year or so. And with regards to PM only allowing major brands such as Apple and Samsung and Motorola, I agree that it's not right as there are so many phones out there that offer 4G LTE that should be allowed on the network. But this is something PM has done and sadly will not share with us a full VoLTE acceptable phone list. At this time, not much can be done.
