I'm currently on a $25/month plan, but I am finding that I run out of data frequently, therefore am considering upgrading to the $39/month plan. However, I don't particularly like the "points" concept and would prefer to keep my current rewards, as it makes a decent saving every month! Is it possible to change plans while keeping the old rewards system?

the note about points does not apply to those in legacy rewards system
You can freely change plan and it wont' affect your current rewards, also confirmed by Community Manager here:

Will I be moved to the new rewards program if I change my plan?
Changing your plan won’t automatically transfer you to our new Public Points rewards program. If you’re currently on our legacy rewards program, you will continue to stay on it. However, we encourage you to explore Public Points, as it opens up even more opportunities for savings.

Yes, you keep all rewards. Rewards are tied up with your Account not plan.
