If I buy 1 GB of data as an add on, is that just for the month or will it always be on my plan?

When you regular monthly data is used up, the system will start using from the 1GB add-on you have.  Any leftover will roll over to the next month and ready to be used again when the regular data are used up again

All purchased add-ons remain on the account until they are fully consumed.

The only add-ons which do not are the US roaming add-ons, which have an expiry indicated during the purchase process.
