How does the $15 prepaid plan work for data coverage?

Fretman
Good Citizen / Bon Citoyen

Hi Everyone,

For the $15 prepaid plan, if you use up all your 250mb of data, do you still continue to get data coverage but at a capped slower speed?  Or do you need to buy something extra (add-on) to be able to get data coverage until the end of the month.  Thanks.

Those are toll-free numbers, right?

I believe that the mid sept 2019 1Gb data giveaway to existing customers was the first.

Christmas 2019 data and calling giveaway was the second.

How many giveaways have they done while you've been with them?

@Fretman

Forgot to mention. Currently there is a flash sale going on. If you sign up now you get your second month (30 day) free.

https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Announcements/FLASH-SALE-Get-your-second-month-FREE-w...

And with a referral code you get $10 credit. Add Autopay to the mix your next 90 days of service will be under $20 🙂

@Fretman  Keep in mind, the LM throttled data only applies to $25+ plans, while PM's $15 plan is $13 with autopay and decreases $1/year with loyalty, in addition to referral bonuses and community rewards

@pmmobile , Thanks...that basically rules out LM for me.  Based on my phone usage habits, a $15 plan is enough for me.

No data coverage once it's used up; same for the 100 minutes outgoing calls. Running out of data will not stop MMS/picture messaging.

So, you are correct and a data add-on would be needed for additional data coverage. BUT because the data add-on are expensive, it's usually better to buy a "better" plan, or renew your current plan with moderator assistance, early.

@Ludditethanks.  Good to know.  Based on everyone's responses, PM does not offer throttling of data after usage is over.  I'll weigh the pros and cons between PM and LM and see which is best for me.

So, better than nothing but just barely! At least it worked.

Thanks for the report.

I limited my phones internet to 128kbps and opening Bestbuy.ca took 2 minutes and 12 seconds to completely load. However, a website with fewer images such as a Wikipedia page only took 22 seconds less if I don't count images fully loading.

Loading speeds may vary depending on network strength, but I don't think that will change much because 128kbps is really slow and even a terrible connection could probably achieve it.

It happened in September for the first time then again as a Christmas gift. Nothing in writing anywhere so just speculation that it may continue from time to time.

But 128Kb sounds Brutal. Remember 56Kb Dial Up? Think of using that today with the bloated web sites, pictures, graphics etc.

It is faster than on hold listening music on the phone while you are doing something else on your computer.  It may take a bit longer if you need help with the account issues as only moderators can access your account.

@geopublic, I found the $5 plan on the website.  I need some clarification though.  So if I decide to get this add-on, I will have 500 minutes to use for as long as I like?  So I don't have to pay the $15 monthly prepaid plan anymore or do I still need to continue paying $15 per month.  Thank.

Not correct. You first need a plan. So if you get $15 plan for 30 days. You have your 100 minutes the you pay each 30 days  for.

Then once you have a plan you can purchase an add-on. $5 500 minute add-on..the 500 minutes stay on your account until it's all used up.

You first use your 100 minutes then if you use all those up before your 30 day plan ends the n the 500 minutes kick in. If you use let's say 20 minutes of your 500 minutes then your 30 plan renews you start with 100 minutes in your plan and 480 minutes from $5 add-on.

@Fretman keep in mind if you put your credit card for autopay you'll only pay 13$ a month for that plan and if you get a few friend refferals it will be even less!

You need an active plan to be used with your add-on minutes.

That $5 add-on is just that - an add-on to an existing plan, in case you run out of calling minutes, it's not a plan unto itself.

Oh, and those 500mins. don't expire at the end of the month - they roll-over month after month, until they're all used, so it's a nice little safety net if you need it. 👍

@Fretman

PM is prepaid and no pay-per-use.  Therefore, your data will stop working.  There is no data overage charge from PM.

Options to get more data:
1. If your current data limit does not meet your 30 days' need, you may change a plan with more data. You can do the plan from self-serve. You get your data back immediately with plan change.
2. If you want to renew the same plan early, you need to create a moderator support ticket using the ? button at the bottom right hand corner of this page. Moderator wait time is up to 2 days. If your next renewal date is 2 days away, you may just on data diet for a few days until after renewal.
3. You can buy data add-ons $30 1GB data or $10 200MB data. Expensive option

@geopublic, whoa, did not even see that.  That might be perfect for me as my other phone is with Telus on their 400 minute/year plan.  Need to research Public Mobile more.

Yup, I used to be on the Lucky $25 plan, but given that I don't use my phone that much, and especially not for data, I figured I'd cut the cost some, and out of the options available, the PM $15 works best for me(except for my poor coverage around home), AND that $5/500mins. add-on is something I hadn't noticed either, but if I ever need more than my allotted monthly 100 mins. outgoing, I'll be all over that add-on. 👍

@Jb456, thanks.  That is interesting regarding Lucky Mobile.  I looked at them first but decided to look at PM as well because I thought LM did not offer that unlimited throttling option.

The downside with Lucky Mobile as @CannonFodder  mentioned is your calling minutes are used both incoming/outgoing with Lucky Mobile where with Public Mobile incoming is free.

Also Public Mobile has incentives like adding autopay to get $2 reduction every 30 days.. refer a friend $1 every 30 days. Longer you're with PM you get yearly discount $1 ..and participation in community forums for discounts as well.

You need to decide what is better for you savings long term or unlimited data. Also you never know what future holds with PM maybe one day they will offer unlimited throttle data as well.

If you decide on PM don't forget to use a referral code at signup for a $10 credit.

Well, unless you've already gotten close to your data limit(Edit - oops, see you haven't picked a provider yet), you MIGHT never need to worry about it. I too chose the $15 plan here, because I too rarely use data, and although I got the 1GB PM holiday freebie, I STILL have only used a teeny-weeny portion of my allotted 250MB monthly data.....
