Traveling to US

Probably a stupid Q - but I'd like to be sure rather than getting stranded with no coverage in a foreigners country. Thanks in advance for your answers.

I am on the 35$ per boxing day promo month plan that says '75gb data within Canada, US and Mexico @5G speeds'. I am traveling to Florida next week.

Q1. Will I have internet coverage there without any add-ons?

2. If I get the 15$ talk n text add on will I get talk n text coverage anywhere within US? Is it unlimited minutes/text or some restrictions?

3. Is there any other action needed from my end to 'activate' the add-on or internet coverage?

Only because some people have had problems in some areas getting 5G to connect on AT&T even with 5G capable phones that get 5G in Canada.  So safest to try 4G/LTE first for the best chance of connecting.  Once you know everything works then you can try 5G if you want but I don't think it would make much difference as to speed in any case.

@Phil_Adelphus This isn't aimed at you in particular but I think too many people are posting that "you need to switch to 4G" or "make sure to switch to 4G" as if it is a requirement when I don't believe it is necessary. I experienced no issues in the US with my phones on 5G preferred. Perhaps the advice should be "If you have difficulty connecting with your phone on 5G preferred/auto, try switching to 4G/LTE preferred. Just my 2 cents...

@ShankM  Curious.. Why 4G and not 5G?

Pixel 7 is on Public Mobile's VoLTE whitelist so you shouldn't have any problems with voice calls.

@ShankM adding to hairbag1's point, if your phone is able to send and receive text and data works (must have data roaming turned on) but phone calls are not working in or out then this means your phone is not on Public Mobile's whitelist for VoLTE enabled devices. If this is the case try manually connecting to T-Mobile, if you are lucky you might be able to connect to their 2G signal which will still work for calling. The other option is to try using apps like WhatsApp, Messenger etc.

Hi,

Assuming you have $35 CAN/US/MEX boxing week deal with Unlimited wide minutes within US/CAD/MEX + 75GB of data within CAD/US/MEX:

Q1. Will I have internet coverage there without any add-ons?

Yes, you have CAN/US/MEX plan and you will have internet coverage within the US. Don't forget to enable(turn on) Data Roaming on your mobile phone.

2. If I get the 15$ talk n text add on will I get talk n text coverage anywhere within US? Is it unlimited minutes/text or some restrictions?

You have wide unlimited minutes/texts within CAD/US/MEX + data within CAD/US/MEX, you don't have to buy any additional addons. The calls/texts/data within and between 3 countries should work without any additional addons. The phone should be able to support Volte , you can search in the community questions about volte and coverage for phones. If you have a newer phone, you shouldn't have any issues to call/text/use internet.

3. Is there any other action needed from my end to 'activate' the add-on or internet coverage?

You don't have to activate any addon, just enable DATA-ROAMING on your phone for data usage in US.

Hope that helps.

Best.

@ShankM I would leave your phone on 5G auto unless for some reason it doesn't work. I just did a trip through the US with a Pixel 5 and posted a review here: https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Get-Support/USA-Roaming-Review/td-p/1263110

I'm on a pixel 7a, so the Volte should not be an issue I think.

You don't need any add-ons for anything...the plan you have is going to work in Canada, US and Mexico.

@ShankM

No add-ons are required. Make sure you have Data Roaming enabled on your phone. Public Mobile’s US roaming partners are T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon. In my experience, our iPhones connect automatically to one of those networks when entering the US. You will receive a text about US add-ons when entering the US but just ignore it. Everyone receives it whether or not they have a US plan.

@ShankM You don't need to buy any add ons. Your plan covers talk. text and data in Can, US and Mex. Make sure you have data roaming turned on and you should be good to go. To add to what @hairbag1 posted about VOLTE phone required, if your phone is not working on VOLTE your data and texting will still work. Calls in and out may be problematic, needing a T-mobile 2G connection. What phone do you have?

Edit: I see you have a pixel 7 so you don't need to do anything other than data roaming on.

@ShankM

make sure to enabled Roaming data and you'll have data while traveling.  You don't need the add-on for anything. The only fly in the ointment is that you need a volte enabled cellphone while in USA.

added...select 4G...not 5G while in US.
