$5 more for national calling plan?

laoli
Good Citizen / Bon Citoyen

Was told by the sales who signed up me today. Public Mobile will change calling area from national to Provisional only next week.  For $25, you need pay $5 extra in order to call Quebec (from Ontario) , or vice versa.

Will this affect old customer (such as myself) $25 plan? Anybody heard of this price increase?

@gpixel

Don't need to I just qualified gor the "internet for good" $10 per month plan. Now to decide between the $100 desktop or the $110 laptop.

@NDesai

Thx for the post in the lounge it lit a fire under my seat to apply.... that and the previous $5 increase.

@darlicious when one jumps they all jump.

most people dont need telus' fibre internet. have you looked at vmedia

https://www.vmedia.ca/en/internet/british-columbia

25mbps is more than enough for the average user. unless 3-4 people are streaming 4k content then you would need at least double.

@gpixel

Mandatory? I cannot find any info on this other than bell raising their prices. I did find a notice that telus is raising my internet another $5 for a second time in four months. Boy are they going to be surprised when I get to tell them instead I am getting an 85% price reduction. Happy days!

What store?

Approx how old was the sales person? (Sales liar)

Were unconfirmed and he/she gave you a little push. (Push of BS).

I find that hard to believe that some one in the bottom of the pile would know that.

I say not true. That kind of change would be in strict confidence and would be a broadcast released to everyone at the SAME time.

@ShawnC13

 My bad....rereading the original post I realize that it was used as an example vs the salesperson pointing it out as a specific targetted price increase. Anyhow the whole idea suggested that pm is reverting to provincial calling from Canada wide and the processes needed to be put in place for that to happen is absurd and sounds like the salesperson just opened a can of poppycock......

if pm was able to increase the price of the full speed LTE plans. do you think pm would have kept them till this day? or do you think they still would've downgraded to 3g eventually

this would be an interesting solution for the third tier companies to employ instead of following the $5 mandatory scheduled telecom price increases in March.

@laoli this will affect all third tier providers, not only public

As for Rewards... Yes, you have them now, but only because PM chooses so.  They could easily make changes to Auto Pay, Friend referrals, etc. making these carrots disappear.

Nothing is carved in stone when it comes to the incumbents and subscribers are getting used of changing when better deals come along.

@PMinfo, yes they could but I am just saying I good for a few years even if some changes take place.

It doesn't make sense to me for an arbritary price increase when pm's current plans are becoming less competitive. A $5 price increase in conjunction with the ability to call Quebec is discriminatory and a highly suspicious comment. Anyone who is truly worried about a possible price increase to a plan they want to have should schedule a "change on next renewal" til this rumour blows over and cancel it before renewal if need be......

Why is it discriminatory?  He mentioned Provincial and Canada wide plans.  If you don't live in Quebec you would need to get a Canada-wide plan which he was told will be an extra $5 starting next week.  I think it was just a way to show Provincial vs Canada Wide calling,  I don' think it was meant to be harmful.

Yes, Public Mobile has the right to change any of the terms of service, including rates, without notice. Changes become effective thirty days after being
posted at publicmobile.ca/ plans. By purchasing service after a change is posted, including by continuing to top up your account, you accept the current
terms of service. You can cancel service at any time, without penalty or cancellation fees.

If history is any indicator, existing customers should be relatively safe from plan changes.  I would look to Chatr and Lucky to see if they are making any moves.  If not, this might be just hearsay.  Often Public Mobiles is reactionary rather than leading.  More and more, it does look like rewards are what keeps this service together.  It is becoming harder and harder to convince people to join and put in the time to build up the rewards.  I used to have my referral codes memorized lol.

Worst comes to worst, don't get mad, get even.  Own the company and harvest the increase via dividends.

@PMinfo wrote:

The only plan increase could be tried is on the $15 tier...  Few will pay $28+ for PM 3G speeds for 1GB of monthly data / UL T&T.

The gap between Telus & PM prepaid is converging, so if this is the trend, there would be little point in having the 3rd tier discount brand (i.e. Public Mobile).

Telus pricing use to be MUCH higher than prepaid offerings.  Might be a carrot to get subscribers off PM/migrate and then jack the prices at Telus/Koodo.

As the gap closes (and it has been) PM starts to rely more and more on the rewards and hoping the long-term people have built up a solid group of referrals and loyalty discounts or they are going to leave.  For me, I am "stuck" here for quite a while with my rewards still making this a better option for me if prices increase.  THey tried it on the Fall Promo plan a few years ago and that backfired on them.

Was this an authorized dealer or a corporate Public Mobile mall kiosk? And, what's the saleperon's source?

Usually, when and if plans change, past plans that customers already have are usually honored. I do sure hope that Public Mobiile is not considering any moves to make already poor price plans worse.

If find that hard to believe as the norm is more and more becoming to Canada Wide minutes for mobile phones and VOIP.

Example: $30 Telus prepaid

Yeah, does not make any sense price wise. Looks like PM is finally taking rewards seriously. Rewards will be the only difference between PM and Koodo/Telus prepaid if this were to be true.

@JK8  Well, it appears that the only difference is actually LTE vs throttled LTE. PM's "promo" price according to @laoli seems to be $25.

Looks as though all Telus prepaid is attempting a price increase. Perhaps an industry wide (Bell, Telus, Rogers) effort to enhance profitabilty. 😎

Price increases are not unheard of, but If true hopefully history will repeat itself. A year maybe 2 ago iirc pm tried to do a rate increase but the other brands did not follow so pm reversed course.

@laoli If true, best sign up now. PM has good history of grandfathering old plans for current customers; for example I have a $10 plan still being honoured though closed at least a year ago.

At 20% that's quite a jump in pricing. Yuk.

This might make sense on the $15 tier (currently 100 minutes) but would be a subscriber exodus if it affected $23+ tier.

PM is generally a reliable network, but prepaid plans are only marginally competitive now with most competitors.

Given some of the moves (MB upcoming service issues) and potentially this, might suggest that Telus wants to get rid of PM.

@TheGx , thanks and I'm relaxed now.  At least I don't worry about my plan and two senior's plan. Wait Monday and see if PM will do the stupid move. Time will tell.

@laoli :Any price changes and plan changes won't usually effect the plans of customers activated prior to changes, I've been here only two years but during that time all the price/plan changes never effect those previous customers - also from what I've read even some original customers of Public still have their original price plans from then.

It's the sales guy who  did my plan , and my parents in law plans.  I was planning to convert daughter from Fizz to PM. He said he did get formal notice from PM, not someone verbally.

I just text him and he said new sign up will be affected but he is not sure old customers will be grandfathered.

He said he'll call in Monday and update me after.

I really don't want leave  PM and go to other mobile company neither , but $5 increase for non-Ontario calls will force me to do that.

I have to agree with @HALIMACS and @Gunner123 and everyone else on here. Whatever you were told by the salesperson is not going to happen.

If that happens, @laoli , there will be a mass exodus of customers leaving public mobile.

Do you mind me asking what sales department advised this?

I've received some pretty sketchy information from a few unnamed merchants regarding public mobile.

The things they said did not turn out to be accurate and never occurred.

laoli
Good Citizen / Bon Citoyen

There is. He told me he got it this week.  If I want activate my daughter's $25 plan, he recommend do it today before new price start.

Personally I don't think it's good move.  Look at its competitor Lxxxx mobile, the offer extra $$$ vs price increase. What's wrong with Public Mobile ?
