4G plan required for VoLTE?

On a 3G plan, possibly stupid question..but do I need to change to a 4G data plan to use VoLTE?

Also in my phone info, the "VoLTE Provisioned" is greyed out but in the enabled position. IMS Service Status tells me "VoLTE is unavailable". Hoping having VoLTE will help with latency issues I've been having with phone conversations (Pixel 6A). Thanks.

Because 3G capacity is being phased out, and in fact it already has been phased out in the US. Without VoLTE your phone will fall back to the 3G network to make phone calls, and if that network doesn't exist you're not going to be able to make a call. It's important now for anyone that wants to roam in the US, and it will become increasingly important in Canada as more and more of the 3G network gets shut down/re-purposed.

@Meow- So keep that screen open and go to your dialer and call 611 and after pressing go, go back to that screen and see if that info line changes. Without seeing IMS on that screen my bet is you'll see UMTS on that line.

The fuss is faster connect times, more LTE out there - particularly MB, roaming.

Thank you @dust2dust  and @softech .

Nothing at settings and SIM and I do not see 'IMS'.

Mobile voice/data network type: LTE

Hey!! Not big deal and I do not understand what is all the fuss about VoLTE?????

@Meow- Yes, you would dial that code. It doesn't work on my Samsung. Go in to settings about phone and sim and look for mention of IMS.

@Meow that shortcut code does not work on all phones.  Depends on model and OS.

It does not work on S9/s8/s7 that I tested.  I guess it does not work on S10 too

@dbs180 , it is easy enough to check VoLTE status on your account without having to submit a support ticket.  Simply enter this sequence into the dialer, *#*#4636#*#* to bring up a hidden menu.

This did Nothing on my phone?!?!

Should data be On? Do I have to 'dial' this code? Samsung S10.

@hTideGnow- My cynicism would say that it won't be "everybody". Customers may have phones that can do volte but that the company will intentionally, inexplicably deny the enabling of it. We'll see.

HI @dbs180

did you ever got a text saying your account is VoLTE enabled?

With Pixel 6A, it is a compatible phone, as long as your account is enabled

If you make a call, do you see the signal change from LTE to 3G? or LTE to 4G?.  (assuming when idle, your signal is showing LTE)

Nah, no text. Calls are on 3G. That's ok, just gotta bite the bullet, not bother customer service and wait apparently..! 🙄

It's possible that some accounts already have VoLTE enabled but that customers do not yet know about it.   I have VoLTE but have never received any text message about it.  Some customrers have actually had VoLTE since February 22 but it took a few weeks before there was any mention of it by members on Community.

Enabling VoLTE is simply a provisioning update. A customer support agent could actually get this done but they generally don't because it's much quicker to perform mass upgrades than it is to do each account manually.  At the moment, customers are encouraged to avoid contacing customer support agents for this to help ensure that all customers continue to receive prompt responses and service.  The VoLTE upgrade prcoess is ongoing.

Even on a 3G plan you still use the LTE network, so yes you'd have the same access to VoLTE once your account is upgraded.

And I have a Pixel 6a and it works great on VoLTE.

IMS is not registered, and VoLTE is unavailable. Voicemail not going to LTE.

Checked and verified, my Pixel 6A is compatible.

@dbs180   yes, Pixel 6A is compatible.

But IMS said unavailable, I wonder if your account is not provisioned yet.  You want to check with PM support to confirm if they have provisioned the account yet?

Pixel 6A, it's listed as a supported device on PM's VoLTE article.

@dbs180

VoLTE will work on 3G and 4G plans but check to see if your device is compatible on VoLTE:

@dbs180   No,  you don't need 4G plan for VoLTE..   VoLTE will work on 3G plans too.  You just need a compatible phone

What phone do you have?  from what you said, look like it is not currently compatible on PM netwokr
