Hi there. Have a S20 phone and can’t make or receive calls while in US, despite a Canada-US plan. I have now read enough about the known issue of VoLTE. You mentioned about receiving a software update that enabled VoLTE. I have the latest software update and calling is not working. Do you know how I can get a version of software that works?

The command to get phone info isn’t working for the S20 either. Thanks for the suggestion about the voicemail greeting. Some people told me that it wasn’t even going to the voicemail - just didn’t connect and went dead. I couldn’t verify the exact experience.

I would change my voicemail greeting before travel to the US to include the voip #. Any callers redirected to your voicemail when you are "unreachable" would then be informed to call your voip #. (Don't tell them you are away just to call your voip # if they reach your voicemail and need to speak with you directly.)

Well you answered my curiosity with whether VOLTE enabling would carry over from Telus to Public Mobile. Have you tried wifi calling? Here or the US? What does it say under phone info when you dial *#*#INFO#*#* on your dialing pad?

The problem is the new number - don’t know who will call me to give those people the new number! 🙂

I didn’t recall having an VoLTE issue with S20 when with Telus, and I didn’t particularly do anything to enable VoLTE then. Like what hTideGnow is saying, it is more PM as a provider that is not allowing S20s on the whitelist.

hi @EC2024
try using VoIP app TextNow for calls. It will give you a new 10 digits number. People can call you on that new number and you will receive it on the app. And of course, you can make calls that way as well

Yes, just trying my luck in case there is some way to get around the problem. S20 isn't that old and it was working for me before with Telus, so this is definitely a surprise that S20 isn’t on the PM list. So much for switching to PM for having coverage for US, and now I even unknowingly missed a bunch of phone calls. I only found out calling wasn’t working when I tried to make an outbound call.

hi @EC2024 Telus openrd up VoLTE pretty much on all phones that have VoLTE
for PM, they still only allow selected phones
It is true that there have been posts lately about some phones not on the list are able to use VoLTE but this is not confirmed by PM, and I don't see many with those phones confirmed (only 1 or 2 talked about this here and there)
if anything, it is really not a software issue but down to if PM switch the flip to allow more different phones

Thanks for the reply. I was responding to the message for ‘VOLTE not being enabled for phones that support it’.
I see that S20 is not on the whitelist. Just saw that the OP mentioned ‘UPDATE: After 7 months of waiting I finally received a software update today that enabled VoLTE!’ in March 2024, so I was hoping there is some kind of solution. I was with Telus before and didn’t recall having such issues - didn’t know switching to PM will create such issues. Will try to manually choose t-mobile to see if it works when l’m back in the US next.

Are you able to enable VOLTE on your S20? (It still requires provider enabling VOLTE on your account and for your device.) Just curious that if so then maybe you can try something else...?

hi @EC2024 S20 is not on the VoLTE whitelist , only S21 FE or S22 and above
the software issue people talking about was about missing 5G on S20
and since you have no VoLTE, you have to try connect to T-Mobile and change the network mode to 2G and hope it works
if not, using VoIP app like TEXTNOW is the workaround
