3G vs. 4G LTE - What speed is right for you?

Trying to find the perfect plan to suit your needs? Not sure what the difference is between 3G and 4G LTE? You’ve come to the right place.

Before we break it down for you, keep in mind that speed and signal strength can vary depending on your device, its configuration, Internet traffic, environmental conditions and other factors.

3G vs. 4G LTE

We offer data at two different speeds, both great options depending on your phone usage. Opt for 3G if you mostly use data to check Facebook, respond to emails or browse the web. If you’re looking to do all the above plus stream HD videos and consume dynamic content, like Snapchat or Instagram stories with a seamless video experience, 4G LTE is our recommended data speed for you.*

Check out this short video to help visualize the difference:

Here’s what our Oracles had to say about our new 3G data offerings...

@imm1304: “Activating the new line using vouchers was a breeze”

@srlawren: “I've had no problem streaming 1080p YouTube videos, even on a moving SkyTrain to and from work, and that's welcomed.

@Luddite: “Good for browsing, streaming video including Netflix, and uses its data allowance much slower.

@Rockdaddy22: “FaceTime audio is working beautifully”

@NDesai: “With the normal usage, every web page loaded fine, HD videos played fine and apps downloaded fully [...] There should not be any problems with the basic usage of playing and browsing contents.”

How do I check my phone’s network compatibility?

Check your device’s network compatibility here. Note that your device must be compatible with our LTE network in order to receive 4G LTE speeds.

I purchased 3G, but “LTE” is showing in my phone banner.

This is normal. You will receive 3G speeds with the reliability of the LTE network, where available.

I just activated a data plan, or switched to a data plan at a different speed, but the speed change hasn’t taken effect.

It may take up to 48 hours after activating to experience 3G speeds. The same delay may occur when switching from a 4G LTE data plan to a 3G data plan and vice versa.

Do 3G plans support tethering?

Indeed, they do. Tethering works with both 3G and 4G LTE data plans.

Am I eligible for rewards on a 3G plan?

Yes! Both 3G and 4G LTE plans are eligible for rewards. Note that this excludes grandfathered 10-day 4G LTE plans.

*Speed and signal strength may vary with your device, configuration, Internet traffic, environmental conditions, applicable network management and other factors. For a description of Public Mobile’s network management practices, please see Compatible device required.
