Depending how long you are staying in the USA. If longer than a month, pickup a Tello or Mint Mobile SIM at reasonable price.

For 2 weeks, just purchase a USA Roaming Add-on that fit your needs.

Roaming is for Data only. Voice and SMS text will still work.

Data will work on LTE, but will switch over to 2G to make a call.

How long will you be there?

Do you want guaranteed, unlimited talk and data capabilities with little effort?

If so, go with the local pre-paid SIM card when there.   It's cheap, easy to get, reliable, and gives you way better data allotments and talk reliability.

For using your Public account (not its talk/text/data) service, you'll need active service, the roaming bundle, either the phone has been enabled for volte or can do 2G/GSM, networks set to automatic to connect to T-Mobile, data roaming set on, cell data on of course for using the data, network mode set at LTE. If your phone can manually switch to 2G then good. If not and you don't have volte then talk will be trouble.
