iPhone locked

I have a rather unusual problem. A while ago I purchased an iPhone (refurbished, unlocked) for a kid. I didn't need a sim card at that moment. After purchasing the phone, I tested it with a SIM from another phone. It worked, however the phone seems to be SIM locked now. I bought a new SIM but when I place it it says "SIM not supported" and the Settings show "SIM locked". Also AppleID is linked to the phone number that was on the first SIM that we tried.

Is it possible that the SIM is locked by Public Mobile?

If yes, can PM unlock it?

I don't know how it happened

There is no error other that "SIM not supported" when I put in the new SIM. Phone is working normally (using WiFi)

if yes is it yours?

Do a full reset on phone.

Full reset will not help in that case. You were able to do that long ago, but not lately.
If iPhone worked with PM SIM, then it should work with your SIM too. One thing that's confusing me, is that you said 'Also AppleID is linked to the phone number that was on the first SIM that we tried.'.. How's that possible? Why would AppleID be linked to that phone number if you just put SIM in to try?

That happens when you take another valid SIM and put it into an iPhone. All kinds of pop ups. Thus  reset it !!

From Amazon. I don't know what was the original carrier but the phone was unlocked. As I said, it worked with the first SIM from Public Mobile that I tried and now AppleID shows the number that was on the first SIM. AFAIK the only way an AppleId is linked to a phone number is when the phone can make calls. The only explanation is that it's now locked by PM/Telus.

How can I check if the phone is locked by PM/Telus?

What is the error your are getting now?

Is your iPhone showing an Apple account lock screen?

What you get when swipe up?

Is it ask for passcode?

If yes, when you were playing with that SIM card, you somehow letting that SIM card register that Apple account on your phone. Ask owner of that SIM card for the passcode to login.  Then go in the Settings app to do a factory reset and start over again.

@motanu  Try:

  • You may be able to discern the carrier who has locked an iPhone by removing any SIM, rebooting the phone, then going to Settings >> General >> About: scroll down to Carrier and see if one other than PM is showing.
  • To confirm an unlock, try a sync to itunes:

      1. Insert new working SIM - do not turn phone on (if SIM is already in, turn off)
      2. Connect to computer with USB cable
      3. Start iTunes if it doesn't auto run
      4. iPhone will switch on. Wait until iTunes registers it and checks for updates
      5. Install the carrier profile update (if offered)
      6. Disconnect and reboot

cool @motanu   let us know if PM can helps

and you checked if your phone is clean yet?

OK, thanks. Hope that will lead to something

Hi  @motanu  I am just based on the fact now when you put in PM sim card, the phone is showing sim locked.  If phone is locked to Telus/Koodo/PM, any PM sim will be able to use the phone and won't have problem

Of course, you can open a ticket with PM and see if they can unlock it for you.  If they cannot, you have to go back to the seller and ask him instead

To open ticket with PM CS agent for unlocking the phone:

at : https://publicmobile.ca/chatbot.

First type Contact,
then select the only choice there: "Contact..",
from the list of , choose "Other"
finally click link the blue link about submit a ticket
Another page will open and just follow: .

After ticket is submitted, make sure to check your Community Inbox(top right corner envelope icon) periodically for response from PM

If you have problems submitting a ticket, you can open ticket by private message (but this can take longer):

HI @motanu   SIM Locked on iPhone means the phone is locked.

if you put in your PM sim card and it still showing SIM Locked, it is then not locked to Telus

Are you sure your phone was from a Canadian carrier?  try to borrow a Rogers and Bell sim card and check if the SIM lock message is gone.  If still there, then it is other carrier and you have to keep finding

But , how long was the purchase, can you contact the seller?

Also, check device check site to make sure the phone is clean:

https://www.devicecheck.ca/check-status-device-canada/

@motanu

did you get it from Amazon US or Amazon Canada? was it sold and shipped by Amazon or via 3rd party?

if it is locked to PM, any PM sim card would be able to use the device and won't have that SIM Locked error.  The fact that  a PM sim inserted and got the error confirmed that the phone is NOT locked to PM

You mentioned about an AppleID linked to it.  Honest, you need to open ticket with Apple (or go to an Apple store) to have them check it

@motanu

If you did not purchased your iPhone from Telus group of mobile providers, Telus cannot unlock your iPhone.

Trying a SIM card will not lock your iPhone.

Ask your seller to determine the provider originally came from.  Some phones are locked to US providers.

@motanu

where you purchase your iPhone from?  It sound like it was not from Telus or PM  as it looks like it is now locked ot another carrier and hence the PM sim card does not work

If on an iPhone's About->Carrier Lock showing "SIM locked"

You have to ask the carrier where you got the phone from for the carrier unlock code. (PM would not be able to help with this)

I forgot to say that the first SIM we tried was also for Public Mobile
