cannot make calls from US on current plan?

Bunny_Rabbit

Hi I checked my plan before I left for the US and it has free calling and yet I cannot make any calls back to Canada or otherwise. Please advise how to fix this because I will be here for 4 months and need calling ability. Thanks

Hey @Bunny_Rabbit

Sadly that phone won't work in the US. Even though it's pretty new, it won't work there.

Yes, it does. Samsung S20 phones work on VoLTE here. The VoLTE whitelist isn't complete.

This worked to make a call. Apparently LTE was already enabled too this is why I could not see the selection. I had to not let my phone choose the network automatically and then I could choose T-Mobile. Thanks so much for this!

hi @Bunny_Rabbit your issue is about VoLTE and not 5G.  But 5G on S20 series has another issue with PM

if you can use VoIP app for voice calls and data works in US, I won't bother with a new phone yet.  Not a big rush but it is always great to get one latest and greatest 😁

My phone has 5G, I thought it would work. So confused now.

If you are going to get a new phone soon, get one that can use VoLTE on PM network like S25.  But if you want to stay with your current phone,  it will still work with no issue with the 3G network in Canada

hi @Bunny_Rabbit S20+ does not have VoKTE here.  if you don't gobUS a lot or if you can settle with using VoIP app to make calls, you don't need a new phone yet as it will still work using 3G in Canada.  Your issue just that US has retired 3G network already.  But Canada will keep it for another 1-2 years, unless you live in Manitoba

So, I need to get another phone? Roaming on this phone worked just last spring.....??? I am travelling and not at my destination state yet, is it possible that it might work when I get to final destination? California?

Hello @Bunny_Rabbit

It has nothing to do with US networks per say. They no longer have 3G but the important part, the phone itself is not approved to work fully functionally with Public Mobile including using it in the US.

Sadly the only real option is if you're going to be in the US for some time like a few weeks, head down to Walmart and pick up a cheap burner phone. You can check this link to see if the phone will work with Public Mobile.

There is an IMEI checker at the bottom

No difference, it will be same. It is an issue with US network

Try manually connect to T-Mobile and use VoIp app as backup plan

It says I have service with AT&T but somehow no calling. If I upgrade to the Canada-US-Mexico plan, will that work? I will be here for 4 months for work, NEED the ability to make actual calls.

It might work before because 2G was still there

You can try connect to T-MOBILE and hope the 2G network is not gone in your area

Or use VoIP app TextNow or Fongo to make calls on the app with data, great workaround

@Bunny_Rabbit

Which model phone are you using?  Is your phone VOLTE compatible with the PM network?

You can check the IME on your phone on this VoLTE checker:

https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/get-help/articles/volte

If your phone is not VoLTE compatible, your phone will not work for voice calling in the USA.

What phone do you have?

You cannot even make calls from US to US?? If that is the case, it is because your phone is not on PM VoLTE whitelist and cannot use VoLTE in US where US has no 3G

Check your phone here to see if it has VOLTE with PM
