Hello there
We are looking at getting a cell phone for our 12 years old. Does PM have a low monthly cost plan that would offer phone and text only (no data)?
Thanks

@Bruno58 Alternatively you can check out 7-11 Speakout plans, Pay As You Go Cell Phone Plans | SpeakOut Wireless (speakout7eleven.ca). To be clear, they have a pay as you go service for text and talk only. Calls are .35/min, text messages are .20 ea. Inbound messages are free. Here is link directly to talk and text, Talk & Text Cell Phone Rates | SpeakOut Wireless (speakout7eleven.ca).
The money you put on the account is good for 1 yr (365 days). So if this is a minimal use device, you could put $100 on the account and if not used much that could last all year. When you top up the account, unused credit on the account resets so the 365 day counter restarts again. eg. you have $50 left on the account when you add another $100, the $150 on the account expires after 365 days.
They often have promo when you add $100 you get extra $25 added to account. $1.25 is deducted monthly for 911.
So in certain use cases this is a great plan because user uses wifi for data and makes minimal calls, minimal text.
You asked for text and call plan and this is one. Most other telcos offer plans that will include some data. If you're going to do any regular calling/text the PM $15 plan may be better. Texting is free and add more minutes through addons as required.

@Bruno58 If your 12-year old kid wants to send or receive MMS messages (such as pictures or voice files ) in addition to basic SMS messages, then you must enable data on the phone. The data allowance on the plan will not deplete by using MMS, so you can use the smallest allowance you feel is right. Keep in mind that once data is activated, other features on the phone may consume some data, especially basic networking services, which usually cannot be turned off. If the phone is an iPhone, sending and receiving iMessages usually requires some data as well.
As others have said, the 15$ plan is nice and cheap, and will just stop working mid-period if minutes or data are used up. Add-ons are also available if you want temporary extra room without going into a higher-priced plan.

$15 plan is the lowest cost plan. Decent for a kids plan. 250 mb of data is included every 30 day cycle, but gets used up fairly quickly. Only 100 minutes of outgoing calls though. Unlimited texts and incoming calls. You can purchase a $5 Canada wide calling add on for 500 minutes calling.
Nice thing about Public mobile is no surprise charges or overages. If customer runs out of data or minutes, it just stops working. No extra fees.

HI @Bruno58
sorry, all plans come with some data. If you don't need any data, get either the $15 plan with 100 outbound minutes and 250Mb data or $25 plan with unlimited outbound minutes and 1GB (both plans come with unlimited inbound minutes)
yes, there are data, PM is prepaid carrier, so, if data all used up, it would cost you more money, it will just stop. If you really don't need the minutes, just turn of data on your phone

They do not provide phones, but you can get pretty cheap ones at Best Buy or at a Mobile Klinic location.
The plan I would recommend would be the $15 plan which gives a very small amount of data and unlimited texting and unlimited incoming calls.
