@dust2dust   you said "turned on the volte option on the phone"

you meant VoLTE worked for roaming?

btw, thanks for testing for us all!!

What confirmation? Where? When? How?

I see no announcements. I've received no notifications. Though I admit I cheated my way out of the compulsory little checkbox so I never get any emails PM might be spamming out. And I don't follow any social media sites so I'm unaware of anything PM might be posting there.

As far as subscribers using devices which cannot connect to 4G ... I don't think that'll be much of an issue. 3G-only devices just don't exist anymore, I don't think they have for more years than a battery lifetime by now. Almost every new (or used) phone intended for the Canadian market will support at least basic 4G compatibility. And pretty much everyone who subscribes to any "3G Speed" data here is still connecting through 4G/LTE radio hardware anyhow, 3G/HSPA+ is still a fallback option but most people ignore it (and are likely to be unaware of it) unless they're unhappy with their observed data performance.

Communications require compatibility. There's always going to be some diehards who stubbornly refuse to let go of obsolete communications tech - that's not really the provider's problem. Upgrade or die, lol.

Enabling VoLTE on your phone comes from the provider side so once its done for US Roaming its done for everyone but it does not come at the cost of using the 3G network for calling if you dont have a VoLTE capable phone. Only the ability to connect to the 3G network would cause that problem. Your phone will still choose the best network to connect to for its purpose be it data, texts or voice calls.

I said soon enough to cover all the bases.  Frankly I don't really care when it arrives as long as I can make a phone call.  Not having VoLTE on this service is not even a first world problem to me.

That's just the thing, there are more and more PM customers that don't have the ability to call because 3G equipment in their area is outphased / upgraded.  You are essentially saying that seniors/marginalized people/inew immigrants etc who can't afford going with Koodo or Telus don't have the right to calling features in an area that is serviced by Telus' LTE network that has been strengthened at the cost of disabling 3G. I don't call that a first world problem.

This is not an Telus only issue.  ALL Canadaian provider will be phasing out 3G , Rogers, Bell, Telus, they all will.   Blame the fast changing technolgy if you want to.

No phne can be used forever.  When 2G phased out, people talked about the same thing.  Then provider came out with cheap 3G clamshell phone.  I am sure eventually you will find bargain LTE phones when 3G  are completely dead.

Frankly I would rather see a favorable semi-annual dividend increase announcement from Telus.  They are not going to leave this service without talk.  As the 3G network sunsets, VoLTE will roll out soon enough.  I can hear the groans now about my phone does not support VoLTE when it arrives.

Public Mobile is going have to step up their game.  As it is now, a workaround for incoming calls not coming in is to lock your phone into the HSPA network.  However, the HSPA network has become so unreliable (at least for data), that it's become essentially unusable in my area (likely network capacity issues).

Maybe too many customers like you are overloading the 3G network with data.  I have tried the 3G workaround in my area of town.  I have never been able to get reliable data, not now, not when 3G plans were first rolled out.  You were lucky for a while.

Like I said, I don't believe that Telus would leave this service without a functional voice feature due to network upgrades.  The transition is not necessarily a panacea for the customer base.  Immediately all the older phones that don't have VoLTE capability will become paperweights.  The finger pointing might not end with VoLTE adoption.

Hopefully both...fingers crossed. lol don't mess around just put the structure in place so your set up for the near future at least.

@JL9   someone opened ticket with Support about the Roaming situation in US.  Support told him PM is targeting to have VoLTE by September.  But I am not sure if that only about VoLTE in US for roaming for for Canada as well

I didn't see this? Where was this mentioned?

Well, call reliability and quality was never stellar in the area I spend most of my time, but over the last half a year or so it has really deteriorated ( all across 6 different phones, mix of both platforms, Canadian versions where applicable, two of them brand new, I've done my best to optimize them for PM's 3G voice channel etc). When comparing connectivity outdoors in sight line of the nearest tower, LTE is on full bars 95% of the time. On "3G only" we have now a "not connected rate" of about 25%... Guess what is happening to calls?

This has a major impact and is really starting to outweigh the savings (dare I make the comparison to Freedom?). While I'm testing work-arounds as we speak (forwarding to VOIP), I'll be watching this space. If Canada wide VoLTE is showing up for Public Mobile  in the fall I might stick around. I'm not holding my breath, though: It'll be one of the competitions' second tier as of BF if this is not sorted out by then...

@will13am   You sure?  but Fido decided to give up the Roaming profit from it's prepaid customers

but, an agent did tell another customers about the Sept date, I hope that is real.     🙂

And if the is true, now the question is.. US Only? or US and Canada?

Some said that when they were asking for Roaming.  But no official words about us in in Canada (not using roaming)

You got confirmation about VoLTE for Canada , too?
