US roaming in Hawaii

Wondering if anyone has an update on roaming in Hawaii post the 3G changes in the US?

I have a 4G Canadian plan - does that make any difference?

Thanks!

Thank you for linking this! I checked with OP on that thread and it works great in Honolulu - very good news 🙂

then you can forward your PM number/sim and leave the sim at home. it doesn't need to be in a device. texts won't be forwarded unless you use an app.

I think our friend @dust2dust spends time in Hawaii....maybe he's had experience using the roaming add-on.

hi @JanetteG

Yes, it should work in Hawaii , but maybe depends on the exact city you are at

this post from 2 weeks ago confirmed it works (OP posted a problem but just that he renewed the addon too quick.  He was able to use his first 10 days roaming without problem):

Hawaii belong to USA so theoretically US add-on should work but it will depend on your luck as US shut down 3G. You might have some luck with 2G but it is better to find some other means of having mobile service.

Your 4G will not make any difference.

Roaming data and voice might not work too well in Hawaii according to this:

For the voice situation in US (not just Hawaii), it is not a problem with your phone but because PM has not turned on VoLTE yet and the 3G decommission in US hurts.  Check this for more info:

https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Get-Support/US-Roaming-Add-ons-Decommissioning-of-US-...

I suggest you use US local prepaid data sim for data, then download VoIP app like Textnow to make and receive free calls and text

If you need to receive 2FA to login bank or email via text, this workaround won't work.  You might need to change your 2FA to either email or to Authenticator app

@JanetteG hi no having a 4g plan won't make a difference,as for an add on your data may work ok but talk is iffy at best, would recomend a local sim if it was me going (I wish)

Your best option is to purchase a local SIM in Hawaii. Lots of reports indicating it is hit and miss.

You can also use WhatsApp or TextNow on wifi for free calling and texting.
