Text regarding $5/mo 3G usage price increase

Sham_Madani

Hello, I just received a message that I’m going to charge 5$ more because of my device that uses 3G, I’m not sure why because I’m using 5G data on my phone & I don’t really understand the extra charge!

I have a OnePlus 8T, I checked the white list. My phone is volte compatible. I'm not sure why I received the text message.

Your device needs to support VoLTE with Public. You can find out more and check directly here: https://publicmobile.ca/en/get-help/articles/volte

It's another way for Public to scam its customers.

I have a 4g LTE phone and got the same message.  I'm done.

I'm cancelling my service right now.

Sooooo, i popped my number in there, says checkmarks for VoLTE, 5G and eSIM..... does this mean I won't be charged? Or if my phone even touches the 3g will it get the hit? There is no way for me to turn off the chance it might go for 3g in a less covered area....

Same issue - OnePlus 7T with VoLTE available and turned on. Still got the message saying it's not compatible. Seems wrong

I have an Umidigi G100 which is supposed to be 4G LTE compatible but I keep getting messages from Public Mobile that I am on a 3G network and have to pay $5 more a month plus next year my phone won't be supported on their system. Is there anything I can do as I haven't had this phone long and don't have a budget for an expensive phone. Thanks!

Same MSG for me and I have a Samsung Galaxy A05s which is 4G LTE supported. Feels like a scare tactic to buy a new device. My subscription is a 4G plan. This MSG is very confusing and misleading.

HI @Albalshal  and @Fire9

please use the IMEI checker to confirm if the phones are on PM's VoLTE whitelist:
https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/get-help/articles/volte

and @Paulina3 , what phone do you have?

Just received text from Public saying that my device uses 3G network and will need to switch to 4G LTE or 5G to avoid extra billing amount starting in June. My device is a 4G LTE though.
Other users have received similar text in the past. Wondering what the outcome was?

Hi,

I am using a moto g pro (XT2043-7) unlocked device. It supports 4G LTE but public tags it as 3G and sent a SMS to me today that is going to charge 5 dollars monthly fee to use this. I need this to be resolved.

I also got the message.  I have a Samsung Galaxy A14.  It is working on 4G LTE, but does have the option to work in 3G.  So since it it on 4G and my account is 4G I don't think I should have a problem.  I hope I don't.

hi @_A

A30 is not on PM's VoLTE whitelist.  Please use the IMEI checker to confirm:

There's like at least three other posts here about this.

I have received multiple messages from Public Mobile stating that I must upgrade my device to one that is LTE/5G compatible or else I will be charged $5 / month. This is incorrect because my phone is compatible with LTE and 5G networks (OnePlus Nord N200 5G). VoltE is turned on in my phone's settings, and this is the criteria that Public Mobile uses to determine if the device is compatible. How do I ensure that I am not charged extra for the 3G service that I am not even using?

I use a OnePlus 8 Pro and I checked my IMEI and it is a compatible device with the public mobile network. I still got a message stating my phone uses 3G and needs to pay an additional $5 until further notice.

Same. On a 5g plan here too. Phone is 5g. It appears they are saying they will ding you with the charge if they see you connect to 3g.  Settings on my phone don't allow ONLY 4 and 5g. It says it picks from what's available.

Pretty **bleep**ty PM.

hi @_A  @Peter168  @buzzz  @mikeinvernon

  what phone do you have?

got the same message, even with a Canadian version S25. Sucks

Yes I was wondering the same. I just bought the moto g 15 power 2024 4G LTE and want to know if I'm getting a price increase?

I just got that message just now. I actually have a 5G phone. Cell coverage is a little bit fringe here so it often falls back to lower settings. I checked my network settings and there is no seeing to specify ONLY 4 or 5G! Only a setting that will automatically pick from what's available.

So if they turn off the 3g here I'll be fine, but if they keep running 3g here, it's going to ding me. This is bull**bleep**.

hi @Sham_Madani

you have a 5G plan , it is good for mobile data.  But with voice, if your device is old, you might still be using 3G for voice and the end of 3G could impact you

so, an easy fix is to get a new phone that is compatible

I have received a couple of messages saying that my phone uses 3G and that I need to upgrade or I will get a $5 surcharge. My phone, however, is compatible with 4G LTE. There is either some kind of error, or I'm misunderstanding something. I don't want to upgrade my phone if I don't have to!
