Scam? Text that my plan's monthly payment is going up by $4 a month

Jo001
Great Neighbour / Super Voisin

Just got texts on two phones with Public Mobile plans that the monthly payment is going up with $4, In typical Public Mobile language it then invites me to click on the link, because Public Mobile has plans at the increased price but with more data than what my plans currently have.  I am sure it is a scam: I logged into my account and nowhere anything about any increase; the amount that will be deducted next month is still the same.  Please confirm?

I totally agree. PM is not the good choice anymore. If anyone search for the good deal, please share. I am searching now. Freedom mobile is not bad. Additionally, PM can be roaming in Mexico and the US only.

hi @Rikusk

I don't think you can find a  cheaper plan, but check today or check back in a week and see if you get another $25 plan with more data.  It seems like many of those with this price hike is seeing a better $25 plan, like @funpig1  is seeing a $25 10GB  plan.

if you cannot stop the price hike, at least get the plan that worth more (one with more data)

I got the same msg. Going from  $23 to $25. I currently get 6gb with the plan but never even use up to around 3gb a month.

I dont need the extra gb i just need a lower price. I checked any other available plans and they are all more expensive. I went to public for the cheaper plans and that does not seem like the case anymore. I might just have to move starting April 😞

hi @funpig1

I think all subscribers understand mobile carriers will increase price once in a will.  All do

just want to clarify the fact that not all $20 and $23 plans got this price hike.

@hTideGnow

Then you should also let new subscribers know how PM has jacked up their low priced plans from $10 to $13 to $15 to $18 over the years. And, as you noted in another post, after a new customer becomes an existing customer, PM can change the price on 30 days notice.

If the $20 0.5GB plan or $23 2GB plans will still be available, then let me downgrade from $20 3GB to one of them instead of jacking up my plan to $24!

Also, why should an existing $23 6GB plan be forced to $25 10GB instead of the lower $24 8GB plan?

hi @funpig1

that is not true.

Not all $20 and $23 plans getting the price hike.  Only the $20-3GB  and $23-6GB plans are getting the hike.  The current in-market $20 and $23 plans are different (less data), and they are unaffected

I have friends who have both new plans.  They didn't get the text and they have confirmed with the agent. (The proper way instead of guessing around)

I think you need to fact check first before posting to avoid spreading false information to the community.

but it is good you give us a chance to clarify

Yes, I have the same issue. I don't want to be increased. I don't use up my 3gb data. It is really bad when public mobile forced me to increase the plan. I'm thinking to switch to Freedom mobile.

That’s a big increase with very short notice! Not happy looking elsewhere.

hi @Langui

they actually only need to give you 30 days notice.

Happy April Fools Day! I’m in the same boat just upgraded less than a year ago from the $15 plan so I would get unlimited talk to $20 plan and now I get a message of a increase to $24 April 1st. That’s a big increase with very short notice! Not happy looking elsewhere.

My current plan is $23. I got a message that my plan will increase to $25 effective April 1!  That’s really bad news!

HI @Me14

every special could be different.  But last time when PM announced the $3 price hike on $15 plan, they offered a "better" $18 plan as a compensation, too.  And that "special" went way after the price increase date

but again, things could change, ymmv

Me14

Does anyone know how long the "special" offers usually last?    The increase is on April 1st.   If I wait another month to take the new plan (my contract renews on the 3rd), will it still be there, or do I need to grab it now and pay $25 (instead of $23) in March already?

Same situation here. Let me know if you find a better one

HI @Yummy

I am pretty sure this list of plan is only available for $18 subscribers.  Those on $19 and above won't see this whole list

same here 😞

Public Mobile here with an important update. Starting April 1, 2026, your monthly plan will increase by $2 per month, going from $23 to $25 on your next renewal. But wait, there's a silver lining. You can switch to a plan with more data for $25. Log in to your account online or the Public Mobile app to view available options.

Got the same nonsense. I’ve been told to complain to ccts. I pay 23$ for 6gb and the offer for $25 for 10gb has been there for months. If they had offered their existing customers the same price plan they gave new ones recently I would have happily increased but now I have to shop around and see which one of the big 3 offer a better plan for the price i would pay for this. Womp womp. Can’t win with the big 3.

Not for Public Mobile it isn't.  But anyway.

hi @hncfreyja2

if you are keeping track of your book, then you should know price change is not uncommon, it's everywhere

Just last month they were offering $20 60GB and the $20 100GB and $25 150GB glitch plans all including Can/US/Mex.

With these increases, older plan users will be forced to pay more for less.

hi @hncfreyja2

you can downgrade, just the choice might not be as many as you wish

and @MaritimeFlo , it is not unusual you cannot change back to old plan, that is same with many carriers.   But I have to agree, the choice of downgrade is limited

MaritimeFlo

This is exactly my situation. I was baited into upgrading from the $19 plan to the $20 plan. I feel like now it was all orchestrated so they could do this.

I'm scared to take the promotional $24 offer, because they could just do it again in another year.

hncfreyja2
Great Citizen / Super Citoyen

Agreed.  That's a ridiculous increase.

hncfreyja2
Great Citizen / Super Citoyen

Since when are we not able to change our plan??

hncfreyja2
Great Citizen / Super Citoyen

So here's the thing.  I changed from the $19 plan to the $20 to get more data and now instead of paying $19, I gotta pay an extra $5 a month for basically nothing?  What a colossal rip off!  I swear this company just gets worse and worse.  I wish Id've just kept the $19 because I got a feeling I won't be seeing that plan again if at all.  I guess it's back to logging in every few weeks to try to get that price down again.  What a bunch of BS.  Yes, I am PO'd.

sorry @Jo001 , it is  a price hike.

But check My Account , Change Subscription page, you got offered some plans around $24 or $25 but with 8GB data

funpig1
Deputy Mayor / Adjoint au Maire

It's not, if I have to pay $48 more per year for data I will never use.

I rarely exceed 2GB of mobile data per month.  I still have 6GB of non-expiring Holiday Bonus Data which I have never used.

MaritimeFlo
Great Neighbour / Super Voisin

They are bent on nickel-and-diming the guts out of us. Three years ago I was paying $11/mo. for my plan. Then they got rid of the old reward system. Now this.

This makes me want to downgrade my plan since I'm barely using the 3 GB of data I have already have, but apparently existing customers can't downgrade, even to a plan they had in the past. Maybe it's time for me to switch carriers.

hi all,

check if you have a $24 8GB plan, that is a better plan

fleety15
Good Citizen / Bon Citoyen

Yep this happened to my wife.  Bill increasing from $23 to $25, but hey don't worry we will help you out and give you a plan with more data for that new price.  Not a lot of help since my wife doesn't even come close to using her current data, so now we get to pay more for data that won't be used anyway.  I know $2 is not a lot but when everything else goes up it adds up.  This happened to my kids plan in the fall.  I'm sure they will get to my $30 something plan in the near future.  Awesome work PM.
