Referring Family

Hi All! It's been a while since I originally joined Public and now my mom wants to join as well as she's being mistreated by another carrier and she's sick of having to argue over billing each month. I'm planning on buying her a physical SIM card tomorrow and was wondering what the steps are and how to go about it best way? I know that there were some finicky steps in the past that needed to be avoided, so I want to ensure I'm not missing anything. Thank you all in advance.

the Friend Referral code is actually found on Step 4 where you enter the credit card number.  On that page, scroll down to the bottom of the page, there would be 2 boxes: Promo code and Friend Referral code.  Enter it there before you submit payment to move on to next step.

To add to BKNS27’s instructions, remember to add your Referral Code during the activation process. (I think I have read it will be found in Step 6 of the activation process in the PM app.) Then your mother will receive a $10 credit in her account within 72 hours and you will receive 1 reward point every 30 days.

Also, it can be a good idea to set up her account with a new Public Mobile number to test and make sure everything is working properly. Then port over her previous number.

I hope this helps.

The steps must be followed in exact order if you are porting your number over to PM:

  • Make sure your old SIM is active so DON’T CANCEL serviced with them.
  • Purchase a PM SIM from Amazon ($5) or Canadian Cell Supplies ($4) or pick one up from Telus/Koodo/Mobile Klinik store ($10.00) or eSIM from Public (ONLY if your phone is eSIM compatible so check).
  • Download the PM app on your phone to activate the SIM. There is an option to pick a new number or
  • Porting your old number = Use the old account number and not the IMEI to avoid issues. Complete to step 6. Note that your previous service is Koodo prepaid…you will need to pick a temporary number and contact the CS_Agent to complete the porting of your old number.
  • Keep the old SIM in your phone and wait for the text from old carrier and confirm with YES you are porting over to PM within 90 minute window once you get the text.
  • Keep the old SIM in your phone until porting process is completed because the old SIM will continue to work for about 2 hours.
  • Power off the phone once porting is completed then switch to PM SIM and power on your phone.

Is it still true that you leave IMEI blank and just add old provider account number when signing up?

For number porting, the above is true as long as the old provider's account number is availiable.  It is possible to use both IMEI and account number or just IMEI, but there's no reason to unless using the account number fails or if the customer doesn't have the account number readily available.

Once you have the sim, download the Public Mobile app on to her cell and start the activation process.
