Public mobile shutting down?

Kalipalfrey
Great Neighbour / Super Voisin

I just received a call from Koodo saying that PM will be shutting down gradually and that they'll offer me this amazing plan and benefits if I switch over right now on the call. I asked if I could think about it and was told that the great benefits won't be applied to my plan and that I won't find anything like it on their site. Please help

@Kalipalfrey

I can't stand shady salespeople and I shut down cold calling commission based sellers immediately and demand to know how they got my contact information and what privacy laws they broke to get it. For some reason I get hung up on a lot!

The number said it was Public Mobile originally so I honestly have no idea 😓

@Anonymous

Whoops....I guess a case of bad timing and post placing and some vagueness......apologies!

Geez what bunch of negative nellies we have on here today! There will always be a market for a low cost customer that is why pm, lucky and chatr exist because none of the big three want to lose market share. If they don't provide a third tier option it just opens the door for providers like dot mobile to establish a foothold or open the door for RR's mint mobile to be able to do business in Canada. (Ryan is canadian does this satisfy the canadian owned part?)

Public mobile isn't going anywhere anytime soon.....they turn a profit and that's all that matters. Just becsuse the return on investment may only be 100% compared to 400% at koodo and 700% at telus that is still an excellent return compared to say....the average restauant that in good times might turn a profit of 3% if they are fortunate!

@LurganIeUk

Eww...who eats the frozen half baked donuts they ship to timmy's daily? I don't patronize tim horton's after an exceptionally bad customer service experience at the Montreal airport in 2017. But now you have me thinking about hopping on the e-bike and zipping up to duffin's donuts when they put out that $5 bakers dozen of today's "day olds" when the new batch of donuts come out...... much cheaper than those cartem's $3 donuts half a block away!

 @darlicious : ??? If that was a reply to my comment about looking out... that was a reference to another member who jumped all over me for saying something about somebody doing their job.

@softech well not soon but in the coming years they'll probably shutdown.

My guess is they'll last as long as the HSPA network is active.

By 2025 HSPA should be decommissioned. PM could potentially shutdown by then. I doubt we'll get VoLTE.

At first I thought you were crazy for saying that but I'm starting to believe it....

I suggest PC mobile instead, or lucky if they don't close with PM and the entire 3rd teir of carriers.

If anything, I don't think it's that soon.  They just updated the Activation page, running another promo now, and they just screw their plans by taking away Canada Calling...

However, I am not surprise that the future is still up in the air.  3G is going away for sure.  Is PM going away with 3G or moving to VoLTE?  I think this is still undecided.  Probably Big3 all going to make this decision together (yeah.. competition ...😒

@darlicious "I'm pretty sure neither Bell or Rogers would find this kind of behavior acceptable business practices among their own three tiers of mobile providers."

Mabey rogers but not bell. Virgin Mobile and Bell are WAY different in the way Koodo and Telus act. VM and Bell work together and don't end up in situations like this. When I was talking to a bell rep saying I was planning on switching to Virgin the rep was all happy and said they could do it from their end and didn't give me a hard time. If I were to switch from Koodo to PM I'm sure Koodo would put up a fight and try to keep me as a customer. Like seriously ? These companies are under the same umbrella.

@RosieR "perhaps no one wants to work at Public Mobile"

PM is struggling to find a replacement for Catherine. Your right. PM is just down a clear pathway to closure.

It doesn't matter where you are on the ladder of businesses from high end to no frills good customer service rules the day. This is the most frequent complaint and reason a business will lose a customer's business is poor customer service and this starts with the sales staff. If a server waxes on about how great the special is and upsells you a glass of wine that supposedly pairs well with it and the special contains a questionably fresh (?) piece of fish and the wine had oxidized do you grin and bear it or complain? If the restaurant refuses to remedy your complaint and forces you to pay the bill do you return a second time for another meal? I think not.

Nor would I work for an employer who would put me in that position. I have been put in that postion and have finished my shift to never to return.....except to get my paycheque.

ha ha.  Telus called me a couple of weeks ago for a security system....I got him all tied up in his underwear. He promised to remove my name from the calling list. So what should I say next that I get a call??? I am real good at it. And I have no problem calling a sales liar a liar. If I want something...I will do the calls or shopping. But don't call me or knock at my door!!! The only exception is the Brownies's Cookies.

If a sales person is doing their job properly, they don't lie, be aggressive or deceive. If they are aggressive or lie or deceive  then they built their own ***** nest to live in.

You are in BC. You have to ask your self....why does Koodo know your phone number and how do they know you are with PM?

With porting in place you can't be 100% showing who you are with based on your phone number.

As mentioned PM is pretty much forced upon Telus to keep in place as the CTRC has given Telus, Bell, and Rogers an edict to offer low cost service. And for Telus, PM is it!!!

There might a a case if Koodo meets the requirements..and if they did both, PM and Koodo could fly under the Koodo flag, but I doubt it. Why...Koodo is in many kiosks and Telus stores all paying rent and commissions to sales people...so Koodo is not LOW cost. And PM does for less.

As mentioned you were probably approached by what is called an aggressive sales liar.

So just going back to the start...how did they know your number???

@Spudster

When you shop at Superstore do they tell you not to shop at no frills because their apples are rotten because they are cheaper? Does loblaws tell you Independant's customer service sucks? No because they are owned or franchised by the same parent company. If they did and you complained to Galen Weston I'm darn sure he would be none to happy about it.

When I have written Alan and both written and spoken to Melinda and her predecessors Catherine and Tiana they have treated me with the upmost respect, taken my concerns seriously, acted upon my requests and implemented a solution to my issue(s). I have nothing but high praise for the impressive concern that public mobile and its managers have for and how much they care about customer satisfaction and I'm a little offended that you think they don't. This is one of main reasons I am so happy and will remain a pm customer for as long as they exist as a mobile provider.

You really think TELUS would give a rat's $%# about the actions of Koodo, if the end of the day they're making more money or locking in folks with phone contacts to the benefit of the parent company?

Those folks you tag will only give you lip service, don't ya think?

Looking at the original post and the old warning continues to come to mind, if they don't want to give you time to think about you options then the deal is more than likely not good. High pressure sales pitch based on a rumors spells commission sales tactics.

@gpixel wrote:

a lot of members have been saying this lately. Koodo prepaid is basically PM's plans, but full LTE. maybe after the 3g sunset pm will just merge into Koodo or something. then maybe we can keep our rewards 👍.

is that possible?

That is possible @gpixel .  Telus doesn't seem to care about Public Mobile.  Perhaps there are so many complaints from customers, perhaps too much money to fix the outdated system, perhaps no one wants to work at Public Mobile at all, perhaps Telus would rather nuke PM and start with a fresh 3rd tier, perhaps.

@Kalipalfrey

This is getting ridiculous....koodo sales commissioned staff taking advantage of small change in possible call quality that only affects a small percentage of customers in Brandon and Winnipeg Manitoba. Spreading misinformation and blatant lies by one sister company about another under the telus umbrella not only harms public mobile but the parent company as a whole. Its high time @Alan_K or @Melinda_H  gets on the horn to the Telus head office and gets this unscrupulous and unethical sales calls from koodo to stop ( although none of this surprises me coming from koodo).

I'm pretty sure neither Bell or Rogers would find this kind of behavior acceptable business practices among their own three tiers of mobile providers.

I assume this salesperson would say the same script if he is in front of a Telus customer.. "Telus is shutting down soon and you need to join Koodo NOW!!!"  🤔

Agree with @will13am . As long as LuckyMobile and Chartr are around, PM will be too. I wouldn't worry about it till/if it happens and then make a call based on existing options.

I'd hazard a guess that public mobile moderators are not in the loop.

I'm guessing the only folks that may have a clue would be PM staff.

Asking for an employee name or ID number isn't a bad idea though and could be verified by making a call to Koodo

@Kalipalfrey , interesting.

If you get another call, try and obtain a call back number, contact name, agent ID, etc. on the person calling. Do you have a phone number it came from on your caller ID? Search it and see what comes up.

If i were you I would put in a ticket to ensure it was legit by clicking the bubble comment circle on the bottom right hand side of your screen, or use this link to: Get Help With SIMon the Public Mobile chatbot

The person may not even have been calling form Koodo, but rather an authorized reseller.
