Only getting 4g, no LTE.

nosnibornoj

I just set up a new phone with PM today and was only originally getting 3g. I followed instructions I found here to set up the APN and I am now getting 4g but no LTE. Im living downtown Toronto so surely I should be getting LTE. The phone I am using is an ASUS Zenphone 4 ZE554KL which says is compatible with TELUS. I checked compatibility with the IMEI checker on the Public Mobile site and it says it should be compatible. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

@sheytoon good call, I didn' think of that@

Simplest way to confirm is to watch the network indicator while you make a phone call.

Phone calls are on 3G (UMTS/HSPA). Whatever is shown during an active phone call will be your phone's 3G. After hanging up the call you will switch back to LTE, and presumably your icon will change back to 4G.

@mattdxb not required for band detection at least.  You can see in my screen shot on the previous page, I don't have root mode enabled (there's a checkbox on the page).  I haven't rooted my phone, so I'm not sure what it unlocks in LTE Discovery.

Does LTE Discovery still require root? I think it did when I last tried it. It must have been for certain functions. If just used for detecting which band you're on, I think root wasn't required if I remember correctly.

I am on the LG V20 and it only shows that I May on 4G , LTE never shows up but I know I am on LTE . A simple speed test gives me around 60 Mbps

@computergeek541 good points.  Regardless, LTE Discovery doesn't lie.

Adding further to the confusion, some phones shows "4g"
for what other phones label as "3g".  There was time time when "4g" was stated more and more to mean the HSPA type networks.  Even on coverage maps and carrier websites, some would list CDMA EVDO as 3g, UMTS-based networks as 4g, and LTE as 4g LTE.

This was extremely confusing because up until that point, the carriers were  not even allowed to call UMTS-type connections as 4g.  Customers continued, in the most part (at least in my opinion) to refer to HSPA+ as 3g and I found that even customer service at carrier still refered to as 3g as well much of the time.  To this day, many carriers still say that the HSPA networks are 4g on their websites, contrary what I consider to be the most common usage of that term.

Some phones label 4g as meaning LTE, and as mentioned, that includes the popular Asus Zenfone line of devices.  It all depends on the software installed on the specific device.  Installing a custom rom, or sometimes even a software update, can change how 3g/H/H+/4g/LTE is displayed on the phone's screen. 4g can mean different things.

@Asian_sensation agreed with @will13am, there's no need for any of that.  @nosnibornoj is already on LTE!

@nosnibornoj if you don't believe me, download LTE Discovery from the play store and check it out yourself.  For example, here's my phone currently showing as "4G+" in the signal meter, yet I'm clearly connected to band 5 LTE:

There's absolutely no need to do a factory reset.  I don't know why this is suggested so often for any kind of issue, big or small.

@nosnibornoj what @will13am is correct.  "4G" and "LTE" are synonymous, and some phones show one while some show the other.  It can even vary from OS to OS and network to network.

As an exmaple, on my OnePlus 3, in the original Android Marshmallow (6.x) that came out of the box, my phone would show "LTE" or "LTE+" on Public Mobile.  But when the Nougat (7.x) update came along, they changed the phone to now show "4G" or "4G+", but it's exactly the same thing with the same speeds and so on.  The OnePlus forum was flooded with people saying they'd lost their LTE and were "only" getting 4G, but it was confirmed over and over again that nothing but the display had changed.  I don't know if this was a OnePlus-specific change from Marshmallow to Nougat or not, but the point is, they are the same.

As an interesting aside, when I occasionally use my Roam Mobility SIM card for short US trips, it displays as "LTE" or "LTE+" if I remember correctly.  They run on the T-Mobile network in the US.  So it can vary from network to network, OS to OS, phone model to phone model.

TL;DR:  you ARE getting LTE.  "4G" and "LTE" on your phone's network meter are the same thing.

Random thought, I just saw that you mentioned you are on a Samsung S4. I am not quite sure if it is LTE compatible. You might want to look that up.

EDIT: My bad, I read it wrong. I hope it worked for you!

Based on my own experience, zenfones display 4G instead of LTE in the notifiation.  So, everything should be fine.

Switched the sim card slot and still no change.

As for selecting te network. When I do that i only see 4G networks available. And I am aware of the sim card. It seems as though iIhave selected the correct slot but I will switch them around to make sure.

One more thing to consider since you have a dual-SIM phone, refer to the following highlighted area (this is taken directly from the ASUS website for your model)...

Not sure if this applies in your case.

Hey @nosnibornoj,

Make sure that the preferred netowrk type on your phone is set to something along the lines of "LTE/WCDMA/GSM auto"

Also, go to Settings >> Mobile Netowrks >> More  and search for networks manually.  Look for "Public Mobile LTE", if not that then "TELUS LTE" and tap to connect.  Some phones I have used in the past required manually connectiong to LTE for the first time and then the phone remembered.  So its worth trying.

@nosnibornoj

It may still take a bit more time.  I'd let it sit overnight and see if you're still seeing the issue in the morning.  As was mentioned before, some devices will only show "4G" and not show "LTE" even though it is the same as far as your phone is concerned.  Being mindful of your data, you can also verify your speeds with a speed test in a location with good reception tomorrow - that will be the real test of what your exact connection is.

It has now been about two hours since I got the 4g sorted. My girlfriend has public mobile and has LTE in the same room that I am in with a Galaxy S4

No worries, give it some time and I imagine LTE should show up, and you will get the appropriate speed for LTE.  If not, reply back on the forum for more help. Cheers

@Taekgun thanks for confirming that as I was beginning to worry.

To further @ShawnC13's post, some phones newly connected to the network can take up to an hour to fully connect to LTE and show it on your device.  Again, this is assuming your phone supports LTE and will show that symbol.

EDIT: your phone specs show it should support LTE as it has the following bands...

@ShawnC13 I assume it does, I'm only receiving download speed of 5.22mbps and upload of 4.31mbps

@nosnibornoj, Does your phone display 4G LTE?  LTE is a type of 4G technology, and it delivers the best performance and speeds available today.  They are very close to the same things your phone may not display LTE.
