No internet connection when data is ON

Wanjimike
Good Citizen / Bon Citoyen

I bought a phone, (UMDIGI A9) unlocked, on amazon two days ago and subscribed to the 35 dollar plan. https://www.umidigi.com/page-umidigi_a9_overview.html.

I bought my simcard and plan at Walmart

However, I am unable to browse the net outside any wifi range. In other words I am unable to browse using my data. I still have alot of data on my phone.

I can receive and send messages.

I have ran through the hoops on this page: https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/on/get-help/articles/set-up-data-on-an-android-phone,

This includes inputing the names CORRECTLY, no caps, no spaces, good spelling etc etc.

But so far nothing has resolved the issue, even after re-booting the phone.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Mike

That has to be frustrating to say the least. My cell data ,since moving to 4G plan, only works intermittently, and that is irritating enough. I can’t imagine having no cell data at all. I feel it’s Public Mobile’s data issue myself.

@Anonymous

Nicely done....I took a screenshot of that for future use. thx

 @softech :

The problem is that some phones don't allow editing or even adding. Some phones don't have Public Mobile information in their local on-phone database of provider info to link to and pull out.

mmscproxy.mobility.ca or 74.49.0.18 should both work.

@softech

That's what set up on my moto g7+ but it does say telus as my mobile network.

Actually I apologize because there is a magical APN setting the moderators can send an OP struggling to edit an APN in a phone that has greyed out settings. The Umidigi X is one of them. Not the A9. I believe the issue in particular happens with a few models of international phones running Android 9 that locks in the APN of the first sim card inserted in the phone. There are two options to be able to edit the APN :

  1. Insert a freedom sim card ( or a roam sim card if you have an old one now that they are a victim of the pandemic). Edit the APN and save. Power off the phone. Remove the freedom sim card and jnsert the pm sim card and power up the phone and the pm APN should appear tap save if necessary. ( I think I got that right?)
  2. Most moderators are now aware that they can text a configuration file to a customers phone that will automagically set up the pm APN with the few phones with this issue.

Please just see my point. Our purpose in the community is to help customers solve their isues themselves and teach them how to manage their service and accounts without the needing to contact the moderators. As is the case here. Our other purpose is to teach other community members who want to help others how to distinguish when a moderator is necessary ( account related issues) and when not. If you don't know the solution ( vs only a moderator can fix it) then rather than defaulting to telling an OP how to contact a moderator try to find what the solution is so both you and the OP can learn something new.

I knew absolutely nothing about mobile phones, technology and the internet in general when I joined the community almost two years ago. But I set out to learn both for myself, my referrals and so I can help others. I like to help others. I did that by being mentored by some lovely members, by using the search bar....sometimes by just putting the same question the OP asked in the search bar?!! Or as @GinYVR  once told me...."Google is your friend." So I only ask that you try to recognize when your imput would helpful and when not.....even when an OP asks how to contact a moderator that info should be our last resort....never our first post.

@Wanjimike

Your welcome and that little tidbit about your network switching from 3G to 4G makes sense now. Make sure you enable all your data saving tools in your phone now.

@Wanjimike

Should be hipri

Not sure whether there is a space in between alias and redirect in your APN settings.  Hard to see on your screenshot.

MMSC: http://aliasredirect.net/proxy/mb/mmsc

@Wanjimike

I'm glad it worked out....I have two different phones that automatically set their APN and they are both different but still connect to pm.

IT WORKED!!

@Wanjimike

It is hipri.....I thought  I edited quick enough....sorry about that.

@Anonymous

A moderator can't give the OP a magical APN setting its only a matter of making sure they are put in his phone correctly.

@Wanjimike   Check these links as well.

As I said, people have trouble updating the APN on different Umidigi phone.  There are some worksaround which involved getting Freedom SIM or other roam SIM to help to open up the APN editing

(they are different Umidigi models from yours, but the trick might still work.. try)

@Wanjimike

Maybe screenshot your APN settings.  There might be small typo or error that the community members can detect for you.

P.S.  I merged your two posts.
