Need some help "Getting Started" - have read docs - confusing and looking for simple clarity

Hi All,

Wow the docs seem horrible for this, so it's either that or I am simply missing some super obvious thing.  Have to say as a developer that some error messages when validating forms are awful.  An error should not talk about you using the wrong password if the form you filled in does not ask for a password 🙂  Adds to the WTF factor for sure hehe

So thought I'd describe what I'm up to in order to hear what steps I should take for my situation.....

  • Bought Mom a phone
  • Want to transfer her number from Fido (if possible)
  • she has no accounts here
  • she does not have a PM SIM yet
  • I'll do all this on her behalf

So what would the steps be in this case?  I'd typically think that you create an account and then hang all that stuff off it.  Seems like maybe that's not the case.

Thanks for helping to point out my DOH! moment 🙂

Wait until you get to first Plan renewal and see 'interesting' message on her account.

I am not revealing what it is. Let it be 'nice' surprise to you...

Thanks all for the go to store ideas -  I use PM so I don't have to go anywhere 🙂  I'll gladly pay $5 and wait a little to activate- no rush.  Mom is 74 - she can wait a few more days for her 1st smartphone LOL.  SIM ordered - away we go!!

LOL I said OLD school coder right 🙂  Of course I try other browsers hehe.  I also write code that simply works regardless of the browser and doesn't show errors that have nothing to do with the form filled in.  I think we all know this site sucks....it has odd outages...it's often slow....and clearly nobody feels any urgency to fix things (like the "does your phone work on PM" as part of the Getting Started process.  I reported over a week ago that it was broken - and still is).  That should be fixed or removed if they aren't keeping it current.  We get what we pay for though....so I put up with the crap experience because the service itself has always been great for me...and the price is the same 🙂  ...and the Community usually comes shining through - like here today - so many folks lending a hand!!

Cheers

@FishGuy i would not suggest you to buy SIM online from PM, it takes long for them to deliver, could be as long as 2 weeks.

If you want to activate yourself,  get a SIM from local mobile store for around $10 (but be careful,  some store sell it for a lot more, like $20 or $25).. but again, why not activate in store to take advantage of the free SIM...

Hi @FishGuy , go to Walmart or Loblaws or Koodo store, they will activate for you and give you the SIM for free  They will help with the porting as well (make sure your old account still working and do not close it ahead)

Once you have the sim you also have the easy option of activating via live chat:

Sometimes using different browser resolves this issue.

I suggest buying SIM from CCS as it cost $1.99 with free delivery. Customers reported receiving it within a week. Delivery from PM is reported to be 2-3 weeks. Look at their web site and see if you live close by their two loctions and you can pick the SIM there same day.

The steps that the community are giving you will be a great help with this process. Even clicking on the Activate tab on the PM website gives you the 4 step process and if you don't have a sim yet I would definitely recommend CCS for price and timely delivery!

Thanks soft and the rest of you - much appreciated.

I'll be back like Arnie if weirdness ensues 🙂

https://publicmobile.ca/en/on/portal/activation

- Purchase a new Public Mobile SIM card. You can order it from PM or any other retail outlet. Currently CCS (https://canadiancellsupplies.com/) has great offer for Public Mobile (free SIM, 20% first month). Walmart offers free SIM with activation in store.

- If you want to activate service by yourself then get just SIM.

- Have a payment card ready, either a Canadian credit card or Visa debit

- Decide what email address you wish to use on the Activation Portal – each account has to have unique email

- Seek a referral code from a friend or relative who may have active PM service - this will save each of you money. You can ask for referral code here if you care to receive $10 sign up bonus. Person providing referral code will receive 1 point as long as you are PM’s customer.

- Start process of creating PM self-serving account and enter all relevant and required information

- Click activate at the top of this page

- Phone has to be unlocked and not blacklisted. Ideally if bought new after 2017.12.01 when all phones sold in Canada have to be unlocked.

- I would suggest to establish PM service first. Pick any available number. And after few days after confirming everything works as expected you can initiate porting (transfer) of her Fido number.

@FishGuy

1- you need to purchase a PM SIM (on sale at Canadian Cell Supplies for $1.99 online)

2 - leave the Fido SIM in the phone

3 - activate the PM SIM. You will need to create a password, PIN and security question on behalf of your mother...including payment.

4 - replay to the text from Fido that you are porting the number over to PM. There is a 90 minute window for you to reply or else

5 - power off the phone and swap the Fido to PM SIM

Welcome to PM!

Check this link to make sure the number can be transferred to the Telus/Koodo/PM brand.

Buy the sim, activate it and don't forget your referral code and any promo code.

Leave the Fido sim in to wait for the confirmation text and reply yes to it.

Wait for a text saying all done.

Insert new sim.

There may be phone complications. We can cross that bridge when you get there.

@FishGuy you will need to get a PM sim card, activate and you can request porting during activation.  ( you cannot setup an account first without putting sim info for activation)  Make sure your Fido account is active.  Don't throw away your Fido Sim yet.  Once requested porting,  Fido will send you a sms asking if you allow the porting ,, you need to reply within 90 min or the porting will stuck

Since you don't have the sim card yet,  I suggest you to go to a store and activate.  Many stores will give the sim for free.  Current promo works on in store promotion too
