Major network problems

G6q
Great Citizen / Super Citoyen

For the past hour i'm having issues trying to make calls, not receiving texts or calls.

I was able to make some calls but about 90% of my attempts fail but it randomly works. It dials but nothing happens then disconnects maybe 30 seconds later.

I received one call and asked them to call back 20 mins later, but they apparently cannot call me. I cannot successfully call them back. I was supposed to receive a confirmation text, that did not work either.

I have tried scanning for networks and restarting the phone, no effect.

Data works fine.

This appears to be a network issue.

I was not affected by this, though thanks for thinking of me.

I have noticed an interesting pattern, i can make one call without issue, but cannot make a second call for about 20-30 mins after the first. This pattern is very consistent.

news reports at least 40,000 homes still without power after recent late winter ice storm...many poles / hardware to replace. Cell service affected as well. Could be that your issue is related to that restoration effort.

recent news reports at least 40,000 customers still without power in Ontario after late winter ice storm there....many poles / hardware to replace yet. Cell service affected also. Could be you're experiencing  network upset associated with that restoration effort.

Each mobile company should have a list of VoLTE compatible phones. Looks like Telus has a VoLTE checker where you enter the IME of the phone.

Interesting, so Telus does have it

According to PM sources, customers are unable to "turn" on VoLTE to work on the PM network and even Public mobile is unable to turn on.  The phone manufacturer (ie. in this case, LG) needs to turn it on VoLTE.  Since Public mobile only offered VoLTE in 2023, lots of manufacturers only turned on VoTLE on the PM network after 2023.

If you really still want to use your phone, you could move to another provider that has VoLTE enabled for your phone.  Otherwise, to use PM network, you will need to upgrade phones.

The issue is that the 3G network will be decommissioned eventually.  According to Rogers, they are closing the 3G network at the end of July 2025.

From what i understand the phone does 4G/LTE

@G6q

Yes, your phone can operate with LTE/4G, but not VoLTE with the PM network.  I have not checked, but your phone may work with Telus or Koodo because those carriers started VoLTE earlier and have a longer list of VoLTE compatible phones than Public mobile.

Sucks about not working with PM.

How does one determine if it will work with other networks?

you need to understand it is not just your phone can do VoLTE or not, the network has to allow as well

with PM, only selected phone can use VoLTE here, and unfortunately, your LG phone is not on the list

Afterall, your LG phone is old.  Time to shop for new phone

This is a big problem, i am dirt poor. Even going to the $20 plan is a big worry.

When i google G8x and VoLTE it says it can be done but i can't find the option to enable it.

As mentioned earlier, likely an issue with your phone (older) not being able to access the PM network.  It is not VoLTE compatible with Public mobile network. With the refarming of the 850 MHz band, then your voice will be depended on only the 1900 MHz band.  That is hit and miss depending on your location.  If you put the SIM card in a newer VOLTE compatible phone, your talk service should be fine.

I bought my phone in Canada from Costco, though not sure how to check if this issue affects it or not.

hi @G6q

Telus is refarming all of their 850 to 10 MHz LTE B5 in their markets, mainly BC, AB, Windsor, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City.   Bell has not done this, so it won't affect area that has Bell networks which Telus/PM use

So, it might affect voice calls for phones that has only 850 Band 5 on the phone but lack 1900 Mhz, those phone people bought in other country.    If you phone has 1900 Mhz, if your phone are those that sold in Canada,  it likely won't impact you, you won't see any service degrade

Where do you live?  Which phone are you using?

There was a known outage in Eastern Canada and  several customers in the Manitoba area were having network issues this morning.
