Looking into a 2G cell phone

StevenOV22

Hi I just had a question since I'm planning on going back in time. I want a 2 g phone for my son but I don't want him distracted by the apps and what not. Is 2 g supported on public mobile?

Thanks

@StevenOV22,

In addition to other peoples' suggestions about 2G and/or potentially obsolete phones, I suggest you look into Sunbeam Wireless phone for your kid. It is a modern flip-phone that is 3G and 4G compatible, with software based on Android, but with all features either severely trimmed down or altogether disabled.

The "Daisy" model supports calling and texting. The "Dandelion" model doesn't even do texting (it can auto-reply to the effect that it doesn't do texting if you want).

None of their phones allow you to install any kind of app.

I personally own the Daisy as a back-up in case my primary phone dies on me.

Hope this helps,

Not very good idea to get obsolete phone just to stop your son to install and use apps.

Everybody is moving slowly from 3G to 4G so your phone will become unusable and money wasted.

Invest in some app when you can control what is installed on a phone or which sites can be accessed.

@StevenOV22

Only the Roger's network still supports B5 on the 2G network in certain areas or roaming in the US on T-Mobile's 2G network. But even Roger's will eventually completely shutdown its 2G network. Is the point to just have an emergency phone able to text and call? Even flip phones have a browser but with limited capabilities on such a tiny screen. There are only basic features available tools, files, email, camera, radio, mp3, text messaging, phone, browser.

We hear you.  This phone with $15/250MB 3G plan may be what you have in mind.

Alternatively and may be better - if you are using iPhones, you can easily limit your son access to certain period of time and to certain apps. There are apps may be useful and you may want your son to use.

@StevenOV22   No, PM is 3G or 4G/LTE

What you need to get is a simple clamshell phone, no app, just able to make calls

But make sure the phone has compatible 4G bands, PM will eventually move away from 3G as well.  At the moment, likely end of 2025

maybe a phone like this:
