While out and talking to my wife our calls get dropped fairly regularly. I wonder if my SIM card is getting old and causing this problem.

It probably has nothing to do with your SIM cards. It is Public Mobile and their network. Dropped calls is a serious issue and the only fix that I know of is to switch to a tier 1 or 2 service (public Mobile is tier 3). I had my whole family on public mobile. I had to switch my wife to Fido and she has not had one issue with voice calls since. That was 4 months ago.
We were all previously with Telus and had zero issues with voice calls. Although PM runs on the Telus network, they are clearly not the same. I was told by a Bell tech that the service allocation isn't the same at the cell towers. During busy times, Tier 1 services get more priority, followed by tier 2 and then tier 3.
For me, I was recently given a work phone on the Rogers network and I'm not willing to pay much for my personal phone so I stick with Public Mobile. My son is ok with PM because his generation don't voice chat much. But for serious calls, like with the government where you go on hold for an hour before finally getting someone, there is no way I would trust my public mobile service on my personal phone. It is what it is.

both on PM network?
try change network mode to 3G on both phones and test for couple days, maybe it will help

It shouldnt have anything to do with the sim card, it would either be the device itself or the public mobile network. If you're able to test it on another phone that could narrow it down for you. But i have heard about dropped calls being an issue with public mobile in the past (i "thought" they fixed that issue).

HI @ICM
usually not the sim card, but the device or the network
what phone your wife is using? you can try to sim in another phone, that will initiate some kind of system reset and see if that helps
