Data not working; restart is useless, APN settings may be involved

Hello,

My data has become very unstable since perhaps last week. It seems to be not working by default. The error code returned from a browser is "ERR_CONNECTION_RESET". I am sure no proxy is running in background to result this. The text messaging seems to work fine, though.

It's noteworthy that the data symbol in the status bar appears normal - network speed constantly changes as usual despite connection failures.

To solve, I've tried restarting the phone. It doesn't work. I checked my subscription. Nothing is wrong. Then, l went to check the APN settings and they were obviously left untouched. Curiously, when I switch to the other unusable options and then switch back, it CAN solve the problem somehow and restore data use. Only briefly - soon it can fall back to connection errors. This doesn't always work, though. Just occasionally.

Looking forward to hearing your help.

Update: after several changes of APN and communication with IT support, the information provided by @softech seems to work. It went back to 5G with normal speed.

Proxy and port needs to be left blank. The only difference is that the address are now spelled in caps.

I'm not sure it it's the correct settings that solved it (because I believe the same settings didn't work before) or the service was being fixed, but I'll observe for a few days to make sure data really is working.

Hi, after restarting the phone today the data is still not working. I sent and received a few messages before it went dead. 5G and H+ icon makes no difference and the speed symbol also disappeared.

hi @Jagabee775

try reboot the phone every couple hours and test 4G or 5G again.  Leave it back as 3G or WCDMA if no good sign still

Hello @hTideGnow ,

Yes, I'm in Vancouver. My troubles persisted longer than from last night, tho.

Earlier today I found out the Internet wouldn't work unless it is set to H+ through some ways (like disabling 4G/5G auto selection) but I'd still call it very unstable (sometimes okay, sometimes slow, sometimes not connecting)

hi @Jagabee775 are you in Vancouver?  Telus has data issue on 4G and 5G since last night

A workaround is to change your network mode to 3G or WCDMA for now until the issue is fixed

Update: the data works but the connection speed is very slow. Certainly not normal for a 5G phone plan.

Hello @softech ,

Sorry for the late reply. I didn't receive a notification.

I'm pretty sure it's just the data because I was able to use text message to check bus schedule, as well as reaching someone's voicebox through a call.

The brand and model is OPPO Reno8. I could reach APN settings through SIM card info edit in the settings.

I updated the APN information as listed. The information I needed to change include MMS and ProxyMVNO. Data was still not working.

However, as I changed APN: sp.mb.com into isp.mb.com as @Kev58 suggested, the data immediately started working.

I think the solution offered by PB's chatbot still contains sp.mb.com. Could be the source of the problem?

One thing I forgot to add: when I switched back from spare APN to sp.mb.com, it would work for a brief while when the "5G" icon over the Internet bars were changed into "H".

Looks like the "I" got dropped. APN should be  isp.mb.com 😉

@Jagabee775

is it just data does not work but voice calls are working?

what is the brand and model of the phone? some phones have the edit APN button hidden, a trick is to use another sim card to open up the edit buttom, many suggest to use a Freedom sim card

and FYI, update the APN according to this:

APN: sp.mb.com
Proxy:

I didn't find the edit option, but I need to make one correction:

It was APN (Access Point Name) settings, not ANA.
