Can't use data during phone call

ryan5oh
Great Neighbour / Super Voisin

I've noticed that during a phone call, my data stops working. As soon as the phone call ends, data starts working again. Anyone else have this problem?

I have an iPhone SE (2nd gen. / 2020).

@ryan5oh: I don't know how far you've got with this but...

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209044 and scroll down a ways to :

Change your cellular data number

That sounds a lot like what I was mentioning with my Android phone.

Lol...I had a choice of deleting my bonehead explanation or leaving it to show I tested and realized I was completely wrong. I chose the latter rather than a blank post.

The basic reason for this is your phone switches to the 3G network for voice calls while you are set up for mobile data on the 4G LTE network. Ok forget this explanation I just tested it and mine works fine.

As you know, both HSPA and LTE are capable of both voice and data simulaneously.   Any drop in internet connection should only be momentary and usually unnoticeable to the customer.  It's possible that there are HSPA network capacity issues in ryan5oh's area.

Turning off background data would do the opposite of what the customer is asking for.  I do understand if a customer has ran out of data, the mobile data would stop working, but data not working because of running out wouldn't in any way be isolated to when the customer is on a phone call.

That is interesting @Anonymous

👍

I have a dual SIM phone, but have not had an opportunity to use this feature.

@ryan5oh : If the phone also has eSIM capability and maybe you're using it for another service then there might be settings to control that. My phone (Samsung A31 running A11) is dual-SIM and I use both and there's a setting called "Allow all SIMs to use data in calls". It goes on to describe the option "Let secondary SIMs use mobile data during calls. If this is turned off, you can't use mobile data during calls on secondary SIMs.".

@ryan5oh  - what is your Mobile Connection setting set at?

It is on a combined setting like this? Which I believe is normally recommended, unless you are in areas where you need to manually change to 3G temporarily for improved services.

PM does not offer VoLTE, which is what is discussed in the link my friend posted previously. I'm fairly certain this problem has to do with the way the network is configured. Perhaps a PM agent can shed more light on this for you.
