5G versus 4G plans

So I want to move to a plan with faster service and 40gb of data, but the plan that has this is a 5g plan for $40. I only have a 4G phone, would I still get 4g service from this 5g plan? Also, would loyalty stuff transfer to the new subscription?

Bear with me a bit longer. The way I understand your explanation is that our plans are tied to speeds . I do understand that as you say the maximum at 3G would be 21 Mbps. I have my phone’s network set to auto so if it connects to 3G it would max at 21 Mbps. So then since I’m on a 5G plan I should set it to 5G only?

HI @ATHENS

you should set your speed to Automatic and let your phone to choose the network for you, device usually picks 4G.  Yes, your 5G plan will works on 4G too.  It might be better to let it use 4G and still get the top speed as it save your battery

Please bear with my questions I’m just trying to get it clear. So there are 3 actual networks 3 to 5G. But for each network the speeds are throttled to a specific speed?

@ATHENS  Please check my reply above, i have answered your question directly.

A recap, the speed is tied to your plan, not the network, except network does have limitation like 3G networks would not go beyond 21Mbps.  And of course, also limited by your device itself as well

A bit confused- are you saying that PM 5G is not actually on the 5G network but just LTE throttled to 250 mbps? Does this hold true to other carriers such as BELL?

@ATHENS

no matter which plan you have, everyone can access  3G , 4G and 5G network.  Just that the top speed will the throttled according to the plan they subscribed (and of course the limitation of the network and the device used):

3G speed plan: 3Mbps
4G speed plan: 100Mbps
5G speed plan: 250Mbps

this is a PM discussion forum and I cannot speak if this holds true for other carriers or their speed of their plans

@Rupuzes all the plans here are just speed plan.  So, 5G plan actually means 5G Speed plan.  You can use you 4G phone on the 4G network and get up to 250Mbps depends  on your phone, and for sure getting a better top speed of 110Mbps on the 4G Speed plans

I can't say about the loyalty stuff, though I believe you can carry them over.

I have been using a 4g phone with 5g, for a while now and I have not had any problems at all. Things are a touch faster but not the same speed as 5g. However I would still recommend the change.

@Rodex  You can be in 5G plan with 4G phone and should still see faster speeds of 100mbs of 4G plan with phone set to 4G/LTE

add yes you will keep your old rewards no worries their tied to your account not you plan @Rodex
