5G connection speed is slow ??

Yacine2

Hi . My problem is that public mobile mention that the 5G speed is up to 250 Mbps . However, with the 50 go 5G service , my connection has reached a maximum of 30 Mbps . This is very weird and I want to know why . Thanks ( I'm on iPhone 11).

Yeah Virgin is quicker even though 4g. I think the number of towers has a lot to do with this.

I'm in west Toronto and speeds are fine.  There isn't really any way to generalize the speeds in such a large area.  Speeds can and do vary greating depending on specific locations.

@alexs20  I suspect that PM may be intentionally throttling 5G traffic

I'm getting speeds up to and sometimes a bit over the advertised maximum on 5G, latest speedtest was 257Mbps up and 26.1Mbps down when visiting the Ottawa area a week or so ago.  I don't get 5G in my house though, 5G is not as good at penetrating structures and my iPhone set to 5G Auto only gets LTE indoors.  I just tested LTE indoors and got 194Mbps up and 10.9 down (rural but not remote).

hi @alexs20

you Iive in major city or rural area?

Tried Reset network settings?  it is sad without a good 5G connect, but using 4G will still get it top speed you will geton 5G , 250Mbps.  Try a speed test in 4G, I would say ok if you get speed above 100Mbps

I can confirm that in many places, the 5G connection is incredibly slow—around 10 Mbps down and less than 1 Mbps up.

Switching to LTE as the preferred network resolves the issue.

I have three Pixel 7 phones in my family, and all three devices are connected to PM. They all exhibit the same behavior. My daughter, in particular, frequently complains about the slow internet speed since she likes spending time online.

Initially, I thought the issue was limited to the tower near my house. However, after testing in various locations, I observed the same problem everywhere.

I’m not sure what’s causing this, but I suspect that PM may be intentionally throttling 5G traffic.

Look, PM did this and is doing this intentionally. If nothing was changed and working fine for 3 weeks. Why would it all of a sudden change to crawling data speeds slower than 4G. My data speeds with Lucky Mobile were more consistent throughout the month than Public Mobile. Nothing wrong with writing about my experiences to let others know. I will be posting on Reddit soon. Very disappointed with Public Mobile 5G.

HI @Zyron

care or not is not the point.  I asked you to work with support so you can have your issue resolved

if you just got upset and not planning to fix the issue, you obviously do not need to post here for help

Do you really think I care. I'm not loyal to Public Mobile. I am month to month and I can move anywhere. It's a super let down that the 5G service is not up to par and often almost identical with Lucky Mobile 4G. All I'm asking for is fairness and to not mess around. Offer what you say you're gonna offer.

Edit: Public Mobile is throttling my speeds because after my complaints. My speed went up to 70mbps. How convenient?!

hi @Zyron

posting it on media won't help you much

work with PM support first

Of course I'm sure. I have tried everything including adding apn and resetting network settings. It's the network and inferior service from parent company Telus. For 3 weeks, I wasn't gettting speeds of  250mbps but I could live with under 100mbps. Something we should getting on 4G anyways. I do a speed test today and it's unusually slow. I was raving about Public Mobile 5G and posting it on social media but I'm going to retract everything and write my lame experiences with Public Mobile 5G

hi @Zyron

you sure the network mode not set to 3G ?  it should be set as 4G or LTE or Automatic

you can also try once more Reset network settings

if same, report to PM support and ask them to refresh your account

Now it's at 5mbps. What kind of 5G wireless service has speeds of 5mbps. Absolutely nothing. It's insane!

Zyron

Now for Public Mobile 5G is less than 20mbps. Absolutely ridiculous

S20 didn't have a problem for 3 weeks so why now. It was either just over 100 or just under 100 for Public Mobile 5G. Now it's 30mbps or less which is absolutely and utterly absurd

HI @Zyron

you are no lucky

iPhone 11 is not 5G compatible

S20 has some problem and 5G won't work

However, you should get better speed than 100Mbps even on 4G with both S20 or iPhone 11.  You said close to 100 but never 250Mpbs, so what is the average speed?

Zyron

I have a 5G-compatible phone, but it hasn't made a difference. Initially, I experienced speeds close to 100 Mbps, but never reached 250 Mbps. Now, my Samsung S20 is delivering the same speeds I previously had with the iPhone 11.

I initially used an iPhone 11 on Public Mobile 5G, which was slow. I then switched to a Samsung S20 FE, which offered four times the speed due to its superior Wi-Fi and cellular chip. However, after monitoring speeds for a month, my Samsung S20 on Public Mobile 5G has reverted to the same speeds as the iPhone 11. Furthermore, my speed with Lucky Mobile 4G is now faster than that of Public Mobile 5G. This raises concerns about the value of paying for a premium service that is underperforming compared to a 4G option.

Hey @Yacine2,

Unfortunately, the iPhone 11 line-ups are not 5G compatible, just like all previous iPhone models. Concerning speeds, unless you see a slowdown in content loading or video loading, I wouldn't look at the numbers that much. You may also have poor reception, which can impact your speeds. Hope this helps!

@Yacine2 , the advertised speed is a maximum value, not a guaranteed limit.  Network congestion and local effects will reduce speed test results.  Personally I would not worry so much about the numbers as long as daily usage is not affected by data speed performance.  Even if your phone was 5G capable and had a 5G connection that does not mean substantial increases in speed test results as local network conditions will dominate.

@Yacine2   iPhone 11 is not a 5G phone, although you should still be getting faster than 30 Mbps on 4G/LTE.   Is that speed indoors and outdoors, have you tried in different areas where you live?  The first 5G iPhone is the 12.

LTE is ( basically)  4G

HI @Yacine2

LTE = 4G

but you don't see 5G , maybe your phone is not 5G compatible, what phone do you have?

Thank you for taking time to respond me . The major problem is that my phone doesn't show 4g or 5g option . It only shows me LTE or 3g, and don't know why. Thanks

HI @Yacine2

Try Reset all networks once , make sure network mode is set to 5G and test again.  And test in different area, too

And you can also change the Network mode to 4G and test the speed in 4G as well.   See if any difference
