Hello everyone. My niece is travelling to Europe for 2 weeks….going to Italy and France. She is looking for a SIM card that she can maybe call/text home to Canada and specifically have data over there. She is looking for a SIM card that she can just stick in her unlocked phone and it will start working over there. She is not highly tech savvy so she does not want a sim that requires any type of registration or setup.
I was looking on Amazon and was wondering if others have ever tried the following or can recommend something that would suit her from Amazon. TIA,

It really depends on her arrival country but all sim cards require some kind of activation or registration. Often just texting a code to get a code to enter on the app to activate the sim card. If she can use a smartphone she can activate a sim card especially with the ease that competition has created in most of Europe.
If anything international roaming sim cards can be more problematic with customer support being less than stellar. As far as giffgaff goes its on the O2 network the main plan is £10/10gb/30 days with EU roaming data being capped starting next month at 5gb. Calls and texts are still unlimited. Sending @Luddite a private message so he can give you the rundown on giffgaff and generally how most EU sim cards work will be invaluable info to have.
Of course forwarding the pm number to textnow is essential and free wifi is widespread but can be sometimes hard to figure out how to connect when you don't speak or read the language. Any EU sim card has free roaming in other EU countries (most UK sim cards include it as well) and Italy has the second cheapest mobile rates in the world.
For info on giffgaff....

Thank you for the suggestion. I was hoping for something from Amazon as she has an account set up already to purchase something from there. Giffgaff might be too hard for her to figure out.

@JK8 Luddite might be able to give you (your niece) a free SIM if giffgaff is an option in Europe, although not sure if it works in Europe either.
Here's a link to his post regarding giffgaff but I see he only mentions UK for this service: https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Get-Support/Ireland-amp-UK-Not-the-usual-questions-I-...

Luddite seems to like giffgaff. I don't know if it works throughout Europe.
