Since you're checking, if you've bought a used phone, you can also check if it's not blacklisted here:

Check the Status of Your Device in Canada - DeviceCheck.ca

Most reliable way is to try few different SIM cards (Rogers, Bell, PM, etc.).

If they all work - phone has service you are good to go.

Be aware that sometimes SIMs from the same company - different names might work if phone is locked to That company Telus+PM, Rogers+Fido, etc.

@NanaDeb   best way to test, use a SIM that is DIFFERENT from where the phone was originally purchased from.  If it was a phone purchased from Rogers, use a PM SIM.  If it is locked, it will ask you for a PUK code when boot up.  YOu will see something like ""Please enter SIM network unlock PIN""

 

 

if you are unsure where the phone was originally purchased , use 2 different SIM from different providers like Rogers and PM
