If you're interested in upgrading your monthly plan instead of paying for an add-on, the $34 15GB USA-Canada is not bad. This will also be available if you take several trips to the states and you won't have to worry about expiry dates on add-ons. There's also a $39 for 50GB USA-Canada available that I see right now on the PM website.
A few months back, even though my trip was only for 2 weeks, I opted to change to one of the USA-Canada plans instead of purchasing an add-on. In New York, I didn't have to do anything with my settings like 4G/5G, network settings, etc... Your experience may vary due to your phone, but for what it's worth, I have a mid-tier Chinese phone (Xiaomi Poco F3) and it was all automatic and the signals were very good.

@Seewa As backup you can download the Google Maps areas you are travelling to over wifi/data before you go and use them offline.

HI @Seewa
most the time, automatic would be sufficient, but just in case:
To change network carrier:
Settings. Scroll down. Choose Network & internet. Choose Mobile network. Tap "Automatically select network switch" to off and then choose the carrier
To change network mode:
Settings, Choose Network & Internet, Choose Mobile network, Choose Preferred network type.

HI @Seewa
you need at text and data (for google map), so best to get the roaming bundle. PM has the Bundle - US Roaming - Talk, Text and 3GB Data (15 days) for $30
And a reminder, the roaming has a 15 days expiry and start when you done the addon purchase, so, buy right before your trip
When you are in US, connect to T-Mobile or AT&T (you might need to manually connect) and change the network mode to 4G or LTE for more stable connection. of course, you need to turn on Roaming data on your phone
